BRIEF: Cubs Game Day: Cubs lose to Giants, tie A's

The summary: Kyle Schwarber, the Cubs' first pick in the 2014 draft, hit a grand slam in his first spring at-bat against the world champion Giants, but the Giants rallied for five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning at Scottsdale. At Mesa, Mike Olt hit a two-run home run in the second, but the A's rallied for single runs in the seventh and eighth.

At the plate: Javier Baez took two pitches for a ball and strike before flying to left against A's left-hander Barry Zito. Billy McKinney, acquired in the Jeff Samardzija trade last July, hit a home run off Giants reliever Hunter Strickland.

On the mound: Left-hander Travis Wood, pitching in front of scouts from at leat eight organizations, struck out two while retiring all six batters he faced. Wood changed speeds effectively. Jacob Turner and Pierce Johnson combined to hold the Giants to one hit over the first four innings.

In the field: Left fielder Chris Coghlan caught a sinking line drive to rob Billy Butler of a hit in the second

The quote: Wood: "We're definitely going to play in October. I feel like it right now."
