Cubs Game Day: No speech needed

July 07--Manager Joe Maddon sees no need to conduct a team meeting in the wake of the St. Louis Cardinals' 8-2 record against his Chicago Cubs that includes five consecutive victories.

"One thing I know is that players read everything you say every day, whether it's in print or online," said Maddon, whose Cubs will try to snap the losing trend Tuesday in the first game of a split doubleheader against the Cardinals at cool and windy Wrigley Field.

"I feel I have a team meeting every day, almost, based on what I say to you guys. Often times I pointed out, getting over the hump with the Cardinals is a big moment because I feel we're as good as them.

"But we have to prove it on the field. I think our guys read that consistently and they hear me in the dugout. I can get loud in the dugout and point different things out. I'm fine with that. Honestly, I don't believe a speech would add any positive impact whatsoever. Our game is so different. To be played well, it's got to be non-emotional. It's got to be tension-free."

The Cubs will send Jake Arrieta, currently their best pitcher, to the mound against left-hander Tyler Lyons.

Arrieta wasn't selected to the National League All-Star team despite an 8-5 record and 2.80 ERA.

"Of course Jake is worthy," Maddon said. "But I guess (Clayton) Kershaw and (Johnny) Cueto are worthy. It's hard to make any kind of argument when you see those other names, too."
