BRIEF: Wednesday's Game 1 recap: Reds 9, Cubs 1

July 23--The summary

The Reds scratched for four runs in the first inning off Kyle Hendricks and coasted to a 9-1 victory over the Cubs in the first game of a split doubleheader Wednesday at Great American Ball Park.

At the plate

Aside from Kyle Schwarber, the Cubs' offense was listless. Mike Leake, making perhaps his final start for the Reds, retired 16 consecutive batters after Schwarber singled in a run in the third.

On the mound

Hendricks settled down to strike out a career-high nine. But newly promoted Yoervis Medina allowed four runs after retiring the first two batters in the seventh.

In the field

Chris Coghlan made a diving catch toward the left field line to rob Brandon Phillips of an extra-base hit to start the seventh.

Key number

1 -- Games in which the Cubs have allowed nine runs.

The quote

"Leake is a great athlete. He knows how to pitch. He has a good feel for what he's doing. He's not overpowering. He's not unlike Kyle." -- Cubs manager Joe Maddon

Up next

Vs. Phillies, 3:05 p.m. Friday, WGN-9.
