Oct. 04--Kyle Hendricks retired the first 16 batters he faced Saturday night before Martin Maldonado singled as the Cubs held on for a 1-0 victory over the Brewers. Chris Coghlan, trying to impress for a spot in the lineup for Wednesday night's National League wild-card game against the Pirates, hit a triple, double and single.
At the plate
Kris Bryant was 0-for-5 with three strikeouts, and he and Anthony Rizzo both stranded runners in scoring position in each of their final three at-bats. The Cubs were 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
On the mound
Hendricks pitched arguably his best game of the season with eight strikeouts in a 79-pitch performance. Hendricks kept the Brewers' free-swinging batters off-balance with an array of pitches in the high-70s to high-80s mph range.
In the field
Bryant robbed Maldonado of a game-tying hit when he ranged to his left to field his grounder to third in the eighth, and Rizzo subsequently scooped up a low throw from second baseman Javier Baez to complete the double play.
Key number
3.95 -- Hendricks' ERA.
