March 31--Spring record
13-15-1
The summary
Second baseman Javier Baez was scratched from the lineup, about two hours after he was optioned to Triple-A Iowa to work on reducing his high strikeout rate. Jonathan Herrera, making a late bid to earn a spot on the roster, replaced Baez and collected three hits.
At the plate
Dexter Fowler looks more polished from the left side as he pulled a triple down the right field line in the first inning and hit a single up the middle in the second. Hendricks hit singles in his first two at-bats.
On the mound
Relievers Phil Coke, Jason Motte and Zac Rosscup combined to pitch 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Rosscup struck out three in the ninth.
In the field
Tommy La Stella made an exceptional stop at third to retire Casey McGehee in the first but committed a throwing error in the second. Mike Olt took over at third in the seventh but let a grounder by Joaquin Arias scoot between his legs.
Key number
12 1/3 -- Scoreless inning streak by Hendricks that ended.
The quote
Manager Joe Maddon: "A lot of our guys are going to punch. You're just trying to cut the punch down. Be careful what you wish for. If they're not striking out a lot, they could be hitting into double plays. I learned that the hard way."
