Cubs Game Day: Bullpen Day on tap for Sunday

Sept. 11--The Cubs' 13-man bullpen figures to get a workout this week with doubleheaders tonight at Citizens Bank Park and Tuesday in Pittsburgh.

And as a bonus, manager Joe Maddon has scheduled a bullpen day against the Phillies on Sunday, skipping Jason Hammel to use the veteran on Tuesday in the big series against the Pirates.

Maddon said he hasn't decided which reliever will start on Sunday.

"We'll have to wait and see how the bullpen plays the next two days," he said. "We have plenty of them."

Maddon named Travis Wood, Clayton Richard, Trevor Cahill and Carl Edwards Jr. as possible starters since each can go a few innings. He said he expects to wait until after Saturday's game to pick his starter.

Jake Arrieta goes tonight in the opener of the doubleheader, with Kyle Hendricks pitching in Game 2. Maddon said he considered starting a reliever Thursday night in place of Arrieta if the game had started so he wouldn't have to waste his best pitcher, using him a few innings in a possible rainout.

"If there was any kind of concern, we may have done that," he said. "I was thinking about that all day. We did not want him to go out there and do his whole thing and then get put in the clubhouse for a half-four or 45 minutes or whatever."

As it turned out, the game never started.

Here's the lineup for Game 1:

Fowler CF

Jackson RF

Bryant LF

Rizzo 1B

Castro 2B

Baez 3B

Ross C

Arrieta P

Russell SS
