Oct. 11--The streets around Wrigley Field were speckled with blue Saturday afternoon as the Cubs prepared to face the Cardinals in St. Louis for the second game of their playoff series. But Crystal Martinez was dressed in white.
Dressed in a strapless wedding gown that draped down to the concrete near the Ernie Banks statue, she posed with her new husband, Juan. The couple had gotten married about two hours earlier.
"Cubs all day!" he said, wearing a Cubs hat.
The couple planned to play the game at their reception. Despite the Cardinals going up 1-0 in the series on Friday night, the bridal party was confident.
"Cubs will win 3-1!" said the groom's cousin, Rick Martinez, also wearing a Cubs cap.
"I wore this hat on Wednesday," he said, a reference to the wild-card game win over the Pirates, "so I had to wear it again."
The mood reflected the atmosphere around Wrigleyville. It was sunny, and so was Margaret Lake's attitude.
"I don't think Joe would take us this far to drop us like a bad boyfriend," the 59-year-old said. "We'll win today. I think he's going to do what he promised."
Jeremiah Loren and his wife, Emily, were optimistic, though he was still cautious.
"I'm nervous, but I feel good," he said while holding the couple's 8-month-old son, Oliver.
Emily Loren was more adamant.
"I think they had to lose the first game, pull it together, and then they've got it," she said. "We'll be at the Tuesday game."
"Hopefully," her husband said. Tuesday would be Game 4, if necessary.
