Cubs fall to Reds in extra innings; Javier Baez involved in bench-clearing spat

CINCINNATI _ Cubs second baseman Javier Baez and Reds reliever Amir Garrett were the centerpieces of a bench-clearing spat Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader.

Garrett struck out the slumping Baez and yelled while staring directly at Baez, who took exception to Garrett's antics. The two players shared words and moved directly toward each other near the first-base line.

The benches and bullpens cleared, with Anthony Rizzo of the Cubs sprinting directly toward Garrett, who was pulled back by a teammate as the scrum moved toward him. Willson Contreras restrained teammate Albert Almora Jr. while television cameras caught Garrett chirping as teammates moved him near the Reds' dugouts.

The incident seemed to fire up the Cubs, as Ian Happ hit a home run, and Rizzo hit an RBI double in the eighth that enabled the Cubs to rally for a 4-4 tie.

But in the 11th, left-hander Justin Wilson issued three walks _ including a bases-loaded walk to Billy Hamilton with no outs to give the Reds a 5-4 win.

There were no ejections in the scrum.

Pedro Strop allowed a double to Hamilton but struck out Tony Cruz and Jose Peraza to end the ninth.

The Reds snapped a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth thanks to an error by shortstop Addison Russell. Kyle Hendricks, who needed only 56 pitches to get through the first five innings, issued a walk to Joey Votto, and Scooter Gennett and Eugenio Suarez followed with RBI hits.

The Cubs were 1-for-16 with runners in scoring position. Hendricks provided the lone hit, as he whacked a double that struck the center-field fence on one bounce to score Happ in the top of the sixth.

The Cubs, however, missed a chance to score more as Almora popped a bunt to the mound and Russell grounded into a force play in which Rizzo didn't slide into second on a close play.

The Cubs scored their first run in the third on a single by Almora and a double to right field by Kris Bryant.

Victor Caratini started at catcher in place of Contreras at catcher due to the length of Friday night's 8-1 that finished shortly before midnight after a one-hour, 33-minute rain delay.
