The Cubs have acquired left-handed reliever Mike Montgomery from Seattle for minor league left-handed hitter Dan Vogelbach.
The Cubs also will receive pitcher Jordan Pries, who will report to Triple-A Iowa. Double-A Tennessee pitcher Paul Blackburn will be sent to the Mariners' organization.
"We've been looking hard to improve the pen if we could, especially looking for a left-handed pitcher," Cubs President Theo Epstein said. "Montgomery is someone who has very good stuff. He's been performing well this year, and we think is coming into his own. We're really pleased to get him in what we think is a fair deal and someone who has a chance to help us this year and long into the future.
"We paid a price to do that. We traded a couple of very good prospects for him. But we think it's a good deal for Seattle and for us as well."
Montgomery, 27, has a 2.34 ERA in 32 appearances with the Mariners. Cubs manager Joe Maddon is familiar with Montgomery from their days in the Tampa Bay Rays' organization in 2013-14.
"He's got a big arm," Maddon said.
One National League scout raved about Montgomery's skills, particularly his sharp curve and composure.
"He'll do much better on a winning team than he will on a losing team," the scout said. "He's going to be a good fit for the Cubs."
Montgomery also can start but will stay in the bullpen for the remainder of 2016. He is under team control for the next five seasons.
