Cubs co-owner Todd Ricketts reups as Republican National Committee finance chair; led Trump reelection fundraising drive

WASHINGTON — Cubs co-owner Todd Ricketts, who led GOP fundraising efforts to reelect former President Donald Trump, was reappointed Wednesday to another term as the Republican National Committee finance chair.

The move suggests that Ricketts, a Wilmette resident, is not seriously considering a run for Illinois governor in 2022. A member of the billionaire Ricketts family, his name has been mentioned as a potential candidate.

Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel said in a statement to the Chicago Sun-Times, “In addition to being a fantastic fundraiser, Todd has become a great friend. We are absolutely committed to taking back the House and Senate in 2022 and our party is lucky to have his leadership in this fight.”

The RNC executive committee approved McDaniel’s appointment for Ricketts to raise money heading into the 2022 election cycle.

“I am honored to have been re-appointed as National Finance Chairman by the RNC Executive Committee. I look forward to continue working with RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel and Co-Chair Tommy Hicks and GOP elected officials and candidates across the country to advance a pro-freedom, pro-free market agenda to improve the lives of every American,” Ricketts said in a statement.

In 2016, Ricketts was a never-Trumper, leading the anti-Trump charge through the Our Principles PAC.

After Trump was elected, Ricketts accepted Trump’s appointment to be the Deputy Commerce Secretary. Unable to untangle his complex financial holdings to the satisfaction of the Office of Government Ethics, Ricketts withdrew his nomination. After that, with Trump’s backing, Ricketts became the RNC finance chair.
