The Cubs added at least one of the big bullpen arms creating buzz around the clubhouse in recent days, activating Pedro Strop from the injured list Tuesday before opening a three-game series against the Rockies.
Strop missed the last month because of a hamstring injury and returns after making three scoreless appearances with Class AAA Iowa on a minor-league rehab assignment.
He rejoins a bullpen that has blown half its save opportunities this season — with seven different pitchers blowing at least one save chance.
Whether the Cubs pull off a long shot and find enough money in a tight payroll budget to sign free agent closer Craig Kimbrel, the addition of Strop to an inconsistent bullpen might at least help stabilize the beleaguered group while the front office explores trades over the next eight weeks.
Right-hander Dillon Maples was optioned back to Iowa to make room on the roster for Strop.
