Cuala boss Willie Maher fuming over 'terrible tackle' that ended Con O'Callaghan's county final

Cuala manager Willie Maher described Dublin goalkeeper Alan Nolan's challenge that ended Con O'Callaghan's county final yesterday as a 'terrible tackle'.

O'Callaghan raced clear onto a long ball after just three minutes and smashed past the St Brigid's netminder to give Cuala the early advantage.

The Dalkey club would go on to win 1-18 to 1-14 but O'Callaghan is now a doubt for their Leinster quarter-final clash with St Mullins of Carlow.

"It was a terrible tackle," Maher told the Irish Mirror.

"Con isn’t a guy to lie down. He couldn’t continue.

"Everyone else dug in then. And that was the beauty of today. We won as a team. And that was really satisfying."

"He had struck the ball. He was in mid-air. And he was taken out.

"His leg is destroyed. It’s the nature of sport, yes, but I’m very disappointed for Con to suffer such an injury.

“He can’t walk at the moment, has a massive gash on his leg. That’s the one negative from today.

“I don’t know about stitches, it was a very bad dead leg.”
