LINE chat users are being warned of unscrupulous people sending a fraudulent message with a LINE logo to deceive people into updating their accounts so they can steal their personal information.
The Crime Suppression Division police issued the warning via its Facebook page on Wedesday and Twitter on Thursday. It advised users of the popular chat app not to type in any information or respond to the message showing on their screen.
“If such a thing appears on your screen, don’t type anything. Turn off your device and reset it. Unscrupulous people will try to get your personal records… Pass the warning to others to prevent hacking,’’ the CSD wrote on its Facebook page.
The phishing message is in Thai with the Line logo. It reads, “Warning: Your LINE is going to expire today! Unless you update it, you will be unable to chat any more. LINE will immediately stop if you don’t update before 2015-08-05. Update your LINE now! The message instructed users to give their mobile phone numbers and click the “update’’ bottom.
The CSD’s warning drew mixed reactions from online users. Some Facebook users wrote they got the same LINE message, asking them to update their account. Others sagely pointed out the date sent by the message - asking them to update the account before it expires in 2015.
