Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend backs Wilfried Zaha partnership to pose goal threat

Andros Townsend believes his partnership with Wilfried Zaha gives goal-shy Crystal Palace a threat up front.

Roy Hodgson played former England forward Townsend and Zaha together through the middle at Stamford Bridge on Sunday and Townsend registered Palace’s first goal in open play for four matches.

Palace have scored just eight times in the Premier League this season and their lack of goals is a concern.

But Townsend said: “I feel like we trouble defences. Any time I have been given the opportunity to play up there, I have really enjoyed it. Maybe we are not the tallest, or the strongest, but I think we link-up well. Hopefully, if we are given the nod again we can cause more trouble and score more goals.”

Hodgson is likely to stick with Townsend and Zaha when Palace play Tottenham at Selhurst Park on Saturday. Christian Benteke is out injured and Alexander Sorloth and Jordan Ayew have managed just one goal between them this season.

“I have said we need to chip in with goals and hopefully I can score a few more,” said Townsend.
