Crystal Palace vs Sunderland LIVE: Premier League result, final score and reaction

Selhurst Park, home of Crystal Palace Football Club - (Getty Images)

Follow live coverage as Crystal Palace face Sunderland today in the Premier League. Another top-flight season will be covered in full right here with The Independent, as reigning champions Liverpool look to fend off competition from Arsenal, Manchester City and more.

The race for the Champions League places should also be a compelling battle, with a fifth place possible for English teams. Manchester United’s latest rebuild under Ruben Amorim sets expectations high once more after a dismal season last time out.

Meanwhile, it’s Burnley, Leeds United and Sunderland who made it back to the elite after promotion last year and each will have hope they can make it more than a one-year stay. Follow the latest live action from the Premier League below:

Crystal Palace FC 0 - 0 Sunderland AFC

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

17:01

The end of this game has come, and a wasteful deadlock is what both sides leave here with. The match itself started in extremely tame fashion, with scrappy passes and loss of possession being the main talking points in the first half. There were a few chances for either side, most notably for Pino in the 37th minute, where he missed a one-on-one chance by putting his shot wide of the left post. Sunderland also had a chance at the end of the half, and looked to have scored if it wasn’t for Mitchell’s last-ditch block. It was 0-0 at halftime, and the game was poised for a lively second half. The second half was certainly livelier, but neither side could carve open a real goalscoring chance. Pino, Mateta and Kamada had chances near the end of the game to make a breakthrough, but no one in red and blue could put the ball in the net, mainly due to Roefs’ defiant display between the sticks for Sunderland. The away team struggled to make any clear-cut chances in the second half, unlike their counterparts, so they will be happy to take a point back to the north. Palace’s firepower in attack showed through the xG stats, where they clocked up 1.48 xG, eclipsing Sunderland’s 0.36 xG at full-time. They will be disappointed to not have taken advantage of that, but their unbeaten run extends to 15 games on the bounce now! It ends 0-0 here at Selhurst Park. Thank you for joining this live text commentary, goodbye!

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:58

FULL-TIME: CRYSTAL PALACE 0-0 SUNDERLAND

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:58

Sunderland make a late change, and it’s Isidor coming off for Rigg, who hasn’t been given a lot of time to make an impact on this game.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:55

CHANCE! Mateta INCHES away from finding a winner! Guehi won his header inside the six-yard box, but Mateta couldn’t get his foot on the dropping ball! How close was that!?

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:52

Hughes sends a prod towards the goal from outside the box, but it takes a deflection and goes for a corner!

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:52

It’s all Palace now! Sunderland will have to weather this storm to leave here with at least a point!

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:52

There will be FOUR additional minutes for one of these sides to get a winner!

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:52

WOW ROEFS! He has kept Sunderland in this game with two fantastic saves from inside and outside of the box! Uche met a cross at the back of the box, before the ball was palmed out to Kamada, who tried a shot from outside the area - which was saved again!

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:52

‘You don’t know what you’re doing!’ rings around the Holmesdale end after that decision to stop the game for Mukiele. Palace fans are making their thoughts known!

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:52

Mukiele is down with a cramp and the referee has decided to stop the game whilst Palace had the ball in their possession. The argument from the home side is that it wasn’t a head injury, so the game shouldn’t have been stopped.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:52

Sadiki is also coming off for Sunderland, as they make another change at the same time as Palace. Geertruida comes on as a defensive-minded sub late on.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:54

Palace make another change, and it’s a debutant coming on to replace Pino, who has been a livewire in this game, but has struggled to take his chances. He is replaced by Uche in the attack.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:53

Xhaka uses nearly 30 seconds to take a long free-kick, and then sends it straight out of play under no pressure at all. He wasn’t booked either, which annoyed the home crowd even more than before.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:53

SAVED! Mateta stuck out a leg to take an instinctive shot towards goal, following a low cross from Munoz on the right. Roefs stays strong and leaves out an arm or perhaps even a shoulder to deny the Frenchman. Palace will rue these chances.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:39

Roefs is booked for time-wasting as he delays taking the free-kick that is deeper in his half than the edge of his box. Very silly.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:39

The referee gives a very soft free-kick against Mateta on Mukiele, and the home crowd makes their thoughts known to the man in the middle. There have been many challenges on their big striker similar to that, and they haven’t been given.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:38

This game has finally caught a bit of life late on. Less than 15 minutes are remaining, but it is becoming more of an end-to-end affair with the rain continuing to pour down.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:38

SAVED! Roefs makes a brilliant save to deny Kamada! Following a long throw, the ball fell to Kamada on the edge of the box, who struck it on a half-volley and went across his body to the left corner. Roefs got down to save, and Palace’s spirit will be lifted with that.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:32

CLOSE! Diarra gets underneath his shot from the edge of the box and just lifts his shot too high over the bar. It was a difficult shot to pull off, but he came closer than many inside the ground were expecting. Better from Sunderland as they get another shot away.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:30

Sunderland also make their first change of the game, and it’s an appearance for Brobbey, who joined from Ajax. He replaces Adingra in attack, and that may be the key for Sunderland to get a goal late on in this game.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:29

Crystal Palace make their first change of the game, and it’s Devenny who comes on to replace Lerma in that central midfield position. He has been lively, but hasn’t made a real impact on the game.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:28

This game is missing something, and that something is a goal. The match has certainly livened up since the break, but it still remains goalless! The way the game has been so far, you wouldn’t be surprised if this ended 0-0.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:27

There is movement on the Sunderland bench now; we can expect a change imminently!

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:23

Adingra sends in a cross to the back post, from the left side, but Mitchell does well to head clear and stop any danger from that move. There will be a long throw incoming from Mukiele.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:23

You’d expect to see some changes soon, from either side, as this game is crying out for someone to make another big chance. Mateta has been especially quiet and needs something to feed off.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:23

Sunderland fans have recognised this period of pressure for their team, and they are in fine voice inside Selhurst Park. Very impressive noise from the travelling fans.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:23

It’s Sunderland who are enjoying the game most at present. They keep coming back at the Palace end, and the home side are struggling to get out of there! They are hanging on, and all they can do is try and clear the ball out!

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:21

Palace tried to break, following a clearance from a Sunderland corner, but Pino was all on his own and ultimately ran into too much traffic. Palace need to wake up in attack if they want to start making some more chances.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:14

Rain is now falling inside Selhurst Park, and that should hopefully speed up the pace of this game a bit. It has been a rather timid affair, all things considered, so far.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:12

Sunderland have now gone down the other end and earned a corner for themselves. Guehi blocked Talbi’s cross, and the game already feels a lot more open, just under 10 minutes into the second half.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:10

HUGE CHANCES! How are Palace not ahead!? Mateta poked a shot towards goal at the front post, after a cross from Mitchell, and the ball spun back into the middle of the box. Pino was onto it in a flash, but his effort was blocked and sent over the bar by Alderete. Big opportunity there.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:08

Pino shimmies away from his man perfectly, sending him into the Sainsbury’s attached to the ground, before he slides a pass through to Mateta, who can’t get past Mukiele at the back.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:05

KICK-OFF! Both sets of players are back on the pitch, and we’re off and running again!

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:04

It’s half-time here at Selhurst Park, and we’re still in a deadlock as we head into the break. There have been some noteworthy moments from both sides, but overall, it hasn’t been a classic by any stretch. The first real chance of the game came from Pino in the 20th minute as he sent a shot arrowing just wide of the left post of Roefs’ goal. Seventeen minutes later, Pino had an even better chance to open his account in England, but his one-on-one chance was squandered as he side-footed his shot wide of the target again. Sunderland hit back with a chance of their own five minutes later, by Talbi’s close-range shot was blocked at the last minute by Mitchell at the near post. There is plenty of tension in this game, reflected by both teams’ low xG. Palace have created just 0.20 xG, whilst Sunderland have bettered that figure marginally with 0.28 xG. Palace have a 65.2% chance of winning this fixture, according to the Opta live win probability scale, a draw is at 23.9%, and a Sunderland win is at 10.8%.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

16:02

Looking to the second half, Palace need to start making more chances to have shots, as they have come close with the two that they have made so far, so you’d like to think that if they continue, they’ll take one of them. Pino has looked lively, yet raw. He needs to tighten up some of his touches and passes to allow Glasner’s system to take effect. Sunderland are doing well, but their attacks have been tame so far, despite having more of the ball in the opponents' half. If they can add some fire to their attack, they may be able to nick three points from South London.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:50

HALF-TIME: CRYSTAL PALACE 0-0 SUNDERLAND

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:48

Sunderland had another chance from a long set-piece, but again they failed to capitalise upon it, and Palace cleared with ease.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:47

There will be FOUR minutes added on!

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:46

The Sunderland half-time talk will be the more positive one, you would think. They have been good value, despite the score remaining 0-0.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:43

GREAT BLOCK! Mitchell puts in a last-minute block to stop Talbi from almost certainly opening the scoring. The cross from the left evaded all of the Palace defenders and dropped to the Sunderland man at the back post, but he couldn’t get a shot away quickly enough.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:41

Hughes is penalised for a tackle in which he won the ball, but the referee blows his whistle anyway. Hughes has been booked in all Premier League games so far, so that may have been partly down to reputation.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:41

Just over five minutes are remaining, and that Pino chance will more than likely go down as the best chance of the half, and one that should’ve been taken. Glasner will be quietly fuming if they live to regret the chance.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:38

WHAT A MISS! Pino has just missed a HUGE chance to put Palace ahead with his first goal for the club! Kamada produces a peach of a pass through to Pino, and he guides his right-footed shot WIDE at the crucial moment. What an opportunity!

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:35

Roefs has just had his foot on the ball for more than 10 seconds, with no pressure from the Palace frontline. That tells you all you need to know about the pace of this game!

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:34

We’re half an hour in, and the scoreline remains 0-0, which will be pleasing for Palace fans considering they had conceded numerous goals already by this point when they last met here.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:34

A huge shout comes from the home crowd as Pino gets sent to the deck by Reinildo. It was a forceful challenge, but as far as the referee was concerned, there was no foul.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:34

Sadiki takes a moment off the field, but he looks to be coming back on after a check-up by the physios.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:34

It looks as though Sadiki over-stretched whilst reaching for the ball earlier on, but he remains grounded. There is movement on the bench.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:34

Sadiki is down for Sunderland, and it is currently unknown what the reason for his injury is.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:32

The pace has settled in the last few minutes, with Palace knocking the ball between themselves in defence. They aren’t used to having this much of the ball, and operate best when out of possession, and then breaking forward.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:29

Again, Palace had an opportunity to get forward, and it was a similar back-and-forth move we saw in the FA Cup final, but Pino’s ball to release Munoz down the right was very poor, and made the move break down!

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:28

CLOSE! Pino gets Palace’s first shot of the game away, and it whistles past the post! He collected the ball on the right side of the box, then he took a touch without being closed down and sent a shot just wide of the left post.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:21

Palace look to release Mateta through the middle, but Hume came across to cut out any real danger before it could develop fully. It’s cat and mouse at the moment between these two when they have possession.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:17

Isidor is the next player to have an effort towards the Palace goal, but with his back to the target, the shot was on the swivel, and it went out for a goal kick.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:16

Sadiki produced some lovely movement to make a run into the box from a deep position, but he rushes the finish, and it doesn’t trouble Henderson in the slightest.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:15

Munoz has another go at a Sunderland player, this time it was Alderete, and he is into the book for giving the centre-back’s standing leg a proper kick.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:14

Munoz is overzealous in his challenge high up the field, moments after Kamada hits the deck, whilst half-hearted appeals for a penalty arise from the stands. Not given.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:14

It’s got to be said how Sunderland’s squad looks to be in great shape. They have brought in some very shrewd signings, most of which are sat on their bench at the moment.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:11

Sunderland had a free-kick opportunity from a fair way out, and Xhaka’s floating ball into the area was poor, giving possession back to the home side.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:11

Palace put together a few good, snappy passes in the middle, but ultimately, Hughes ended up giving the ball away before a move could take place. The game has settled now, inside the first five minutes.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:04

Sunderland look bright in the early exchanges of the game; they have had their possession deep inside Palace’s half and are looking to pressure Henderson’s goal.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:01

KICK-OFF! Thomas Bramall blows his whistle for the first time here, and the game is up and running!

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

15:01

The teams are out on the pitch, and we’re nearly ready for kick-off here in London!

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

14:52

Team news now, and Palace are without Adam Wharton and Ismaila Sarr, who will both undoubtedly be big misses for the home side. Lerma starts in the midfield to replace the Englishman. All of their summer signings make the squad, with one of them starting. Pino begins in the attacking midfield role, behind the ever-present Mateta. Canvot and Uche start on the bench, with minutes expected for both at some point in the game. For Sunderland, there are two changes to their starting side from their last game against Brentford. Isidor replaces Mayenda up front, and Adingra replaces Le Fee, meaning a big reshuffle in the front three for the away side. They are still without their matchday one hero, Dan Ballard, and Luke O’Nien is also still out injured. Guehi takes the armband for Palace, and Xhaka captains Sunderland.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

14:52

SUNDERLAND SUBS: Anthony Patterson, Lutsharel Geertruida, Arthur Masuaku, Dan Neil, Chris Rigg, Harrison Jones, Eliezer Mayenda, Brian Brobbey, Bertrand Traore.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

14:52

SUNDERLAND (4-3-3): Robin Roefs; Reinildo Mandava, Omar Alderete, Nordi Mukiele, Trai Hume; Noah Sadiki, Granit Xhaka, Habib Diarra; Simon Adingra, Wilson Isidor, Chemsdine Talbi.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

14:47

CRYSTAL PALACE SUBS: Walter Benitez, Rio Cardines, Nathaniel Clyne, Jaydee Canvot, Romain Esse, Borna Sosa, Kaden Rodney, Justin Devenny, Christantus Uche.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

14:47

CRYSTAL PALACE (3-4-2-1): Dean Henderson; Marc Guehi, Maxence Lacroix, Chris Richards; Tyrick Mitchell, Jefferson Lerma, Will Hughes, Daniel Munoz; Daichi Kamada, Yeremy Pino; Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

14:41

Sunderland are enjoying their life back in the top flight, and have racked up six points from a possible nine so far. Their two wins came against West Ham and Brentford, with a 96th-minute winner from Wilson Isidor securing all three points last time out. Their one loss came against their fellow promoted side, Burnley, which would have been a fixture earmarked by Regis Le Bris as one they’d have wanted to win. That didn’t materialise, but he will be happy with the position that his side is in early on in the season.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

14:37

Crystal Palace come into this game on the longest unbeaten streak of any team in the Premier League, after already facing Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa! They extended their run to 14 straight games without a defeat after their stunning win against Aston Villa last time out, where their captain, Marc Guehi, scored a goal of the month contender. He stayed put after a deadline day fiasco regarding a transfer to Liverpool, but Palace fans are safe in the knowledge that he will play for them this season. Oliver Glasner will hope his side can keep up their impressive resilience and overcome what should be a beatable opponent.

Crystal Palace vs Sunderland

14:36

We’re heading South of the River Thames here on matchday four, and it’s Crystal Palace who are playing hosts to newly-promoted Sunderland. The last time these two faced each other was back in 2017, and Sunderland blew away the Eagles in a 4-0 away win. Palace fans still recall that fixture as the worst they’ve ‘ever seen’. One of the only two hat-tricks scored by a Palace player in the Premier League was in the reverse fixture that season, when Yannick Bolasie netted thrice. It remains to be seen whether their present-day meetings will be as goal-infested, but it won’t be long until we find out.
