Crystal Palace v Liverpool LIVE: Community Shield match stream and latest updates

Sheer jubilation: Crystal Palace - (Getty Images)

Crystal Palace vs Liverpool LIVE

Crysal Palace stunned Premier League champions Liverpool to lift the Community Shield and get their 2025-26 season off to the best possible start. Oliver Glasner’s FA Cup winners arrived back at Wembley for a second time in three months after their shock win over Manchester City in the cup final last term, and they repeated their heroics on penalties after an entertaining 2-2 draw.

Hugo Ekitike, Liverpool’s new £68million striker from Eintracht Frankfurt, opened the scoring with a neat finish on four minutes, and Dean Henderson was on hand to deny Cody Gakpo from making it two on the quarter-hour. Jean-Philippe Mateta levelled from the spot after Ismaila Sarr was fouled by Virgil van Dijk, but Jeremie Frimpong’s freak goal from a cross off the right reinstated Liverpool’s advantage.

Arne Slot’s side almost held out, before van Dijk stepped out of defence trying to catch Sarr offside, but the Senegalese broke free and slotted past Alisson. That took the game to penalties, where Henderson was the hero, saving from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott after Mohamed Salah had skied his spot-kick, and Justin Devenny did the business to win it for Palace.

FT: Crystal Palace 2-2 Liverpool

There we have it. To penalties we go. Don’t go anywhere...

Matt Verri reports

17:02 , Oli Gent

90+6 mins: Devenny inches away from winning it for Palace with near enough the final kick of normal time. Glasner almost collapsed to the ground. We're going to penalties.

Crystal Palace 2-2 Liverpool

17:01 , Oli Gent

90+5 mins: Robertson sends a cross in from deep, but Henderson does really well flying off his line to pluck it out of the air as Salah throws himself at it.

Crystal Palace 2-2 Liverpool

16:59 , Oli Gent

90+3 mins: Lacroix wins first contact with a clearing header and Szoboszlai looks to hit one from the edge of the area through a crowd of bodies, but Henderson collects. Guehi is down again, and needs to come off. He’s replaced by Justin Devenny.

Crystal Palace 2-2 Liverpool

16:58 , Oli Gent

90+1 mins: Guehi is down holding his leg, and that could be a concern for Palace. He’s up and walking around now, but Liverpool have a corner. Do Palace make a change?

Crystal Palace 2-2 Liverpool

16:57 , Oli Gent

90 mins: Five added minutes.

Crystal Palace 2-2 Liverpool

16:53 , Oli Gent

88 mins: We’re moving towards penalties here as Salah gets booked for a tug on Eze.

Crystal Palace 2-2 Liverpool

16:50 , Oli Gent

85 mins: Florian Wirtz is replaced by Harvey Elliott, and Andy Robertson is on for Kerkez.

Jefferson Lerma replaces Adam Wharton for Palace.

Crystal Palace 2-2 Liverpool

16:50 , Oli Gent

83 mins: Close! Liverpool with a big chance as Kerkez sends in a nice, low cross in towards Salah, who is unmarked! The Egyptian sends a low fizzer towards goal, but it’s straight down the throat of Henderson.

Crystal Palace 2-2 Liverpool

16:46 , Oli Gent

80 mins: Penalty? Has Alexis Mac Allister handled that? Palace are screaming for a penalty as a cross is sent into the middle, and the replays show that the ball hits the Argentine’s arm... but the referee says no!

Matt Verri reports

16:46 , Oli Gent

79 mins: Obvious questions over how Kerkez and Van Dijk let Sarr have so much space there, but it's a superb pass by Wharton to play him in. Palace were level for four minutes after equalising in the first half - will want a slight improvement on that this time...

Crystal Palace 2-2 Liverpool

16:44 , Oli Gent

Goal! 77 minutes: It’s 2-2, and it’s Ismaila Sarr! The semi-final Wembley hero against Aston Villa in the FA Cup delivers at the home of football again! The Senegalese forward makes no mistake, with a cool finish as he goes one v one! Hughes wrestles it off Gakpo, and Palace break. Van Dijk steps up to try and catch Sarr offside, but he finishes calmly to equalise!

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

16:39 , Oli Gent

73 mins: It’s actually a 4-2-2-2, with Wirtz and Szoboszlai the two No10s operating behind the wide forwards Gakpo and Salah.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

16:38 , Oli Gent

72 mins: Tactically, how will that leave Liverpool? Who will play through the middle? You’d assume that Cody Gakpo will move into the central striking role, with Szoboszlai moving into a more advanced position ahead of the new pivot.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

16:37 , Oli Gent

70 mins: Two changes for Liverpool, and it looks as though they’re both happening in midfield. Wataru Endo and Alexis Mac Allister are preparing to come on, replacing Curtis Jones and Hugo Ekitike.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

16:33 , Oli Gent

67 mins: Free kick, Palace. Salah is a bit overzealous in his challenge on Hughes, as the Englishman wins the free kick in centre-field.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

16:29 , Oli Gent

63 mins: Great save! Szoboszlai gives it away cheaply and Palace are at Liverpool’s defence. Wharton drives through the heart of the Premier League champions and feeds Eze to his left. Eze takes a touch and lashes one towards the near post, where Alisson gets down to stop with his leg.

Matt Verri reports

16:26 , Oli Gent

61 mins: Palace fans in full voice as "F*** UEFA, and f*** Marinakis" rings out around that half of Wembley...

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

16:24 , Oli Gent

58 mins: Close! How did that not go in? Palace so close to an equaliser, as Guehi sends in a lovely cross from the left. Mateta flicks it on, and Sarr throws himself at it, getting the slightest of touches, but it just flies wide! Encouragement for Glasner and Palace.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

16:21 , Oli Gent

56 mins: No penalty! Eze goes chasing after a punt into the left channel, and Curtis Jones is breathing down his neck in hot pursuit. The attacking midfielder enters the box, and Jones has to be careful, but the ball just runs away from Eze, who falls to the turf in rather more hope than expectation.

Matt Verri reports

16:18 , Oli Gent

54 mins: Liverpool's left-hand side has brought their biggest threat throughout the match and it should have brought a second goal there. Brilliant from Wirtz and Kerkez in the build-up, Ekitike presented with a huge chance to get his second. Big miss.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

16:18 , Oli Gent

52 mins: Close! Ekitike goes just shy of a second after a lovely one-touch move from Liverpool. Wirtz picks him out with a super ball inside, and the Frenchman blazes wide!

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

16:15 , Oli Gent

49 mins: Munoz is down and hurt as the right wing-back trips over the referee Chris Kavanagh. A comic way to injure yourself, but the Colombian seems to be ok.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

16:15 , Oli Gent

48 mins: Salah is already more involved in this half as he links up with Frimpong on the underlap. Wirtz comes over to take the corner that the pair earned off Mitchell, but Richards is underneath it to clear.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

16:13 , Oli Gent

47 mins: Close! An immediate chance for Ekitike as the cross comes in from the left, and the Frenchman gets his head on it from point-blank range, but he nods wide!

Kick off

16:11 , Oli Gent

46 mins: We are back underway.

Matt Verri reports

15:57 , Oli Gent

Liverpool good value for their half-time lead, with Ekitike a real threat in attack. Some moments of encouragement though for Palace - Van Dijk and Konate haven't looked entirely comfortable.

HT: Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

15:55 , Oli Gent

There’s the interval, and Liverpool go in ahead after a bit of a rollercoaster opening 45.

Plenty for both managers to digest, what will the second half bring?

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

15:53 , Oli Gent

45+6 mins: Wirtz picks it up on the left corner of the box, and he feeds his former Leverkusen colleague Frimpong, who has moved infield to add another body to the attack. It comes out to the Dutchman, who takes a swipe, but it’s high and wide.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

15:50 , Oli Gent

45+4 mins: The game is slightly petering out as we approach the interval. It is baking out there, to be fair.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

15:48 , Oli Gent

45 mins: Seven added minutes, while Wirtz is booked for kicking the ball away and delaying a restart.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

15:45 , Oli Gent

43 mins: First yellow card of the afternoon as Konate brings Mateta down with a late sliding challenge on his compatriot.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

15:44 , Oli Gent

42 mins: We’ve not actually seen too much from Liverpool’s full-backs, or Mo Salah, to be perfectly honest. Yes, Frimpong reinstated their lead, but otherwise, he’s been a bit more reserved on the overlap. Salah has only really had about 10 touches all game, while I’ve just seen Milos Kerkez hare down the left, chasing a loose ball towards the touchline, before getting bodied by Lacroix into the advertising hoardings.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

15:42 , Oli Gent

40 mins: It's been fairly quiet from both Eberechi Eze and Florian Wirtz so far in the middle of the pitch. Neither has been able to influence the game much so far - Palace in particular need to fix that.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

15:40 , Oli Gent

37 mins: A bit more of a measured last few minutes after a manic first half-hour. Liverpool are controlling the tempo a bit more, but Palace have shown that they can be devastating on the counter.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

15:36 , Oli Gent

34 mins: Wrong decision! Sarr cuts inside with the intent on crafting out a shot at goal for himself, but he dallies for too long before trying to find Munoz wide right, but Kerkez intercepts with ease!

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

15:34 , Oli Gent

32 mins: Although there are two other debutants that have got on the scoresheet today, Florian Wirtz has been the glue that has knitted everything together so far for Liverpool. So influential in that No10 hole behind the striker.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

15:30 , Oli Gent

28 mins: Palace are being forced into an early change with Daichi Kamada down and needing treatment. It doesn’t look as though he can continue, as Will Hughes gets stripped and ready to enter the fray.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

15:28 , Oli Gent

26 mins: The players are having a much-needed drinks break in the heat. Think I need one too.

Matt Verri reports

15:26 , Oli Gent

23 mins: Whatever Frimpong says after the match, he did not mean that. But Liverpool don't care - that's two debutants on the scoresheet with barely 20 minutes played.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

15:24 , Oli Gent

Goal! 21 mins: It’s gone in, somehow! Liverpool fans were applauding Diogo Jota in the 20th minute, and suddenly, they’re ahead again. It’s worked to the right where Frimpong takes on Mitchell, and floats in a cross. He tries to hang it up to the back post, and it loops up and over Henderson and into the net!

Crystal Palace 1-1 Liverpool

15:22 , Oli Gent

20 mins: Close! Palace have grown into the game with the wing-backs a real threat on either side now. Munoz sends an inviting cross into the far post where Mitchell ghosts in, and the left wing-back fires a cross-shot across the box, but it just evades Mateta on its way through!

Matt Verri reports

15:21 , Oli Gent

19 mins: Glasner had his head in his hands and was marching back to his seat after Mateta made a mess of that one-on-one. Turned around just in time to see Sarr be brought down by Van Dijk.

Crystal Palace 1-1 Liverpool

15:19 , Oli Gent

Goal! 17 mins: It’s 1-1, and Mateta makes no mistake from 12 yards! Palace are level, game on.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

15:18 , Oli Gent

16 mins: Penalty! It’s Palace who get the spot-kick as van Dijk fells Sarr! Mateta doesn’t get the shot away as Alisson smothers him, and the Senegalese picks it the loose ball and darts across the box. Van Dijk dangles a leg, and the forward goes flying to the floor! What a chance for the Eagles here!

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

15:17 , Oli Gent

15 mins: What a save! Liverpool sweep forwards with sheer pace and power once more as Ekitike turns it around the corner with the deftest of touches. It’s worked out for Gakpo, who has a chance here, and it’s a great stop from Henderson to keep out the Dutchman!

Matt Verri reports

15:14 , Oli Gent

13 mins: Big let-off for Palace. Liverpool had a six-on-two as they countered from that corner, but Gakpo chose pretty much the only wrong option. Liverpool look so quick and powerful in these early stages

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

15:13 , Oli Gent

12 mins: Corner, Palace. Kamada comes again down the left with a neat touch and turn tight to the touchline. Frimpong challenges him, and concedes the set play. Chance, but Konate is there again. Opportunity for Liverpool to break here...

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

15:12 , Oli Gent

10 mins: How do Palace respond from that hammer blow? A real sock to the stomach early doors for the Eagles. Chris Richards has a chance to launch a long throw into the box here. He aims for Lacroix, but Konate beats his compatriot in the air.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

15:11 , Oli Gent

8 mins: That finish was Ekitike’s fourth touch of the game. Clinical.

Matt Verri reports

15:09 , Oli Gent

6 mins: Patient build-up, brilliant finish. Ekitike looked offside in real time and the Palace fans were convinced the flag was about to go up, but the Liverpool striker timed his run perfectly. Who needs Alexander Isak?

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

15:07 , Oli Gent

Goal! 4 mins: It’s Hugo Ekitike on his debut! What a start, as the Reds work it down the left. Wirtz plays it into him down the left channel, and he creates some space for himself, takes it inside, gets a half-yard, and slides it into the far corner!

Crystal Palace 0-0 Liverpool

15:06 , Oli Gent

4 mins: Curtis Jones is the deepest of the Liverpool’s midfielders this afternoon, filling in in that Gravenberch role in front of the back four.

It means that Szoboszlai can maraud forward to support the attacks, and pick up pockets of space alongside Florian Wirtz.

Matt Verri reports

15:04 , Oli Gent

3 min: Deafening noise from the Palace supporters in the opening minutes, and a few flares have been set off behind that goal. Fair to say they're enjoying their return to Wembley.

Kick off!

15:03 , Oli Gent

1 min: We are underway.

A minute's silence

15:02 , Oli Gent

... for Diogo Jota as Wembley falls to a hush as they remember the late Portuguese forward and his brother.

A real shame that there are some that are making noise.

Matt Verri reports

15:01 , Oli Gent

Fair few cheers from the Liverpool end as Marc Guehi's name is read out ahead of kick-off. The Crystal Palace captain has entered the final 12 months of his contract and Liverpool are believed to be in the market for a new centre-back...

The players are out!

14:55 , Oli Gent

... we are ready for kick-off.

Don’t go anywhere.

Matt Verri reports

14:52 , Oli Gent

Ian Rush and Steve Parish lay wreaths as Diogo Jota and Andre Silva are remembered ahead of kick-off. Both sets of fans on their feet in applause as the Liverpool supporters break into Jota's chant.

Slot opens door to more signings

14:50 , Oli Gent

Arne Slot has admitted that Liverpool might not be done in the transfer market...

“We have more than enough options that can play [at centre-back], but as this club has always acted, if we see a chance in the market, we will not hesitate to take it.”

Interesting. Could we see a bid for Marc Guehi, Palace’s captain today, arrive before the transfer deadline?

Joel Ward on the mic

14:45 , Oli Gent

TNT Sports have got former Palace captain Joel Ward on their pundit desk for this game. It’s wholesome to see, and Oliver Glasner, speaking to the broadcaster, lauds his the defender, who departed the Eagles upon the expiration of his contract last term.

Slot explains Gravenberch absence

14:40 , Oli Gent

Arne Slot has said that the reason why Ryan Gravenberch does not feature at all in Liverpool’s matchday squad is because the Dutchman became a father yesterday.

The former Ajax midfielder has shone in pre-season to continue his superb form from last term, but he misses out today, with Curtis Jones replacing him in the engine room.

Palace 'still hopeful' of Europa League reinstatement

14:35 , Oli Gent

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner tells TNT Sports that he is “still hopeful” that the Eagles will get reinstated back into the Europa League after their demotion to the Conference League.

The FA Cup winners are currently in the midst of their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport case where they are looking to overturn UEFA’s decision to demote them into Europe’s tertiary competition as a result of their supposed multi-club ownership model with Lyon.

In the spotlight

14:30 , Oli Gent

There are two key Crystal Palace players that will be under the microscope this afternoon.

Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi have both been heavily linked with moves away from Selhurst Park this summer.

Eze has been touted for a switch over the river to Arsenal, while Guehi has been a target previously for today’s opposition, as well as Newcastle United.

How will both perform today, and can they repeat their FA Cup final heroics against the hot favourites for the Premier League title this season?

Matt Verri reports

14:16 , Oli Gent

Crystal Palace name the same XI that started the FA Cup final nearly three months ago. Positive for them that Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze are still at the club, but it's not hard to see why Oliver Glanser has voiced his frustration at a "passive" transfer window.

Team news: As expected for Palace

14:15 , Oli Gent

Confirmed Crystal Palace XI: Henderson; Richards, Lacroix, Guehi; Munoz, Wharton, Kamada, Mitchell; Eze, Sarr; Mateta

Subs: Benitez, Lerma, Clyne, Hughes, Esse, Edouard, Sosa, Devenny, Cardines

Matt Verri reports

14:06 , Oli Gent

It will be interesting to see how that Liverpool midfield works this afternoon. On paper it's very attacking, with it looking like Curtis Jones could be the deepest of the three in the absence of Ryan Gravenberch. Palace will feel that's an area that could exploit.

Crystal Palace to lift the trophy: 9/4

Liverpool to lift the trophy: 1/4

Odds via Betfair (subject to change).

Tributes to be paid to Diogo Jota and Andre Silva

13:38 , Giuseppe Muro

Tributes will be paid at Wembley to former Reds forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who both died in a car accident on July 3.

Wreaths will be laid before kick-off and a period of silence will also be observed.

Glasner targets more joy against Liverpool on ‘dream’ Wembley return

13:29 , Giuseppe Muro

Oliver Glasner is convinced Crystal Palace are capable of instilling fear into Liverpool as they live out their "childhood dreams" at Wembley.

Palace will learn on Monday - via a verdict from the Court of Arbitration for Sport - whether they will compete in the Europa League or Conference League this season, but first will look to upset another top-flight giant after defeating Manchester City to claim their maiden major trophy in May.

The Eagles are unbeaten in their last three trips to Anfield, drawing twice and winning once - a fact that is not lost on Glasner, who will be relieved to shelve conversations about Palace's legal drama and focus on another chance at silverware and the new campaign.

"That's why we asked to play the Community Shield at Anfield, because we are unbeaten there," joked the Austrian.

"But, again, nobody listens to us. But we (were) unbeaten at Wembley (last season), so that's why we accepted it at the end.

"Honestly I don't know why, but I'm always entering the games and have the confidence and the belief that we can win it. We showed it against Arsenal, we showed it against City, against Villa, last game against Liverpool.

"We know they are a great team, but I know we are a great team as well. We know that if we perform at our top level, I think no-one likes to play against us."

Wembley clash ‘a good challenge’ for Liverpool

13:21 , Giuseppe Muro

Arne Slot has called today’s game against Crystal Palace a "good challenge" for Liverpool.

After a pre-season campaign in which they have faced Preston, Stoke, AC Milan, Yokohama F. Marinos and Athletic Bilbao, this afternoon will be their first meeting with Premier League opposition this summer.

“It is nice if you can start the season with the chance of winning something," Slot said. "Normally you have to play numerous games before you can win something.

"If it's the League Cup, FA Cup, let alone (the) Premier League or Champions League, normally you win something in the end of the season. Now we have a chance to win something in the beginning of the season.

"Unfortunately, we face a very good Crystal Palace that have been very difficult to win against for us, because we played 1-1 against them in the last game of the season.

"They showed in the last final - and even in the semi-final, by the way, as well - how difficult it is to win a one-off game (against) them.

"I think most of the players that they have are still there, so even more reason to know what a difficult team it is to play against."

Isak to Liverpool deal OFF as Reds 'turn to alternative transfer option'

13:11 , Giuseppe Muro

Liverpool’s hopes of signing Alexander Isak appear to be over after Newcastle made it clear their star striker is not for sale.

Newcastle’s Saudi owners have decided Isak will not be allowed to move to Anfield this summer and fresh reports say Liverpool have now backed away from the transfer.

Liverpool are also said to have identified a new striker target as an alternative transfer option, having been made been made aware of Newcastle’s refusal to consider a sale when they had a bid worth around £110million rejected last week.

Head to head history and results

Crystal Palace wins: 15

Liverpool wins: 37

Draws: 14

Prediction

12:57 , Giuseppe Muro

Liverpool start as favourites but Crystal Palace can take encouragement from having overcome the odds to beat Manchester City to win the FA Cup last season.

The game could be a close affair and will go straight to a penalty shootout if the scores are level after 90 minutes.

But Liverpool, strengthened by spending almost £300million in the transfer market this summer, should have enough to win.

Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike will both be looking to make an impact.

Liverpool to win, 2-1.
