Match reports

I’ll leave you with some wise words from our various correspondents. Thanks for your company; see you later for Spurs v Wolves. Don’t be late!

Well? Who is leading it?

Arne Slot's reaction

Very difficult first half for us. They did really well and we were lucky it was only 1-0. The second half was the opposite.

Set-pieces were one of our bigger strengths last season, but we conceded two at Newcastle and two today so we need to do better. This league is more and more and more about set-pieces.

Their style fits really well with the players they have – low block, fast players and an excellent target man on the counter-attack – and we had a lot of problems with that in the first half.

Full time: Atletico Madrid 5-2 Real Madrid

A famous win for Atletico, who roared back from 2-1 down to give Real one helluva beating.

GOAL! Atletico Madrid 5-2 Real Madrid (Griezmann 90+4)

A smooth, classy finish from Antoine Griezmann makes it 5-2 to Atletico in the derby!

Full time: Crystal Palace 2-1 Liverpool

That’s one of Eddie Nketiah’s most important goals for Arsenal, never mind Crystal Palace. But let’s focus on Palace; pound for pound, is there a more impressive or likeable team in English football right now?

I’ll give you a clue: is there ----.

GOAL GIVEN! Nketiah was onside, the goal is given and the final whistle has been blown. That is a sensational win for a wonderful Crystal Palace side.

The substitute Eddie Nketiah has put Palace ahead from a long throw. But there’s a VAR check for offside.

GOAL! Crystal Palace 2-1 Liverpool (Nketiah 90+7)

Liverpool, the late-goal kings, have been given a taste of their medicine!

Full time: Chelsea 1-3 Brighton

Brighton have beaten Chelsea for the third game in a row. It’s no way to treat your benefactor, really.

90+4 min: Crystal Palace 1-1 Liverpool

“Delighted that Liverpool kept faith with Federico Chiesa who has looked good and a bit more like his old self (when he played for Fiorentina),” writes Colum Fordham. “He can be a dynamic, creative force and his two-footed, as he showed with his near miss with his left peg and the goal with his right. Liverpool will be oleased with a draw against a dynamic Palace.”

Patience is a virtue, eh, even in football #SmythoutAmorimoutEveryoneout.

Hearts top of the Scottish Premiership

GOAL! Chelsea 1-3 Brighton (Welbeck 90+10)

Chelsea’s nightmare second half is complete. They tried to play out from the back, made a Horlicks of it and were punished by the substitute Danny Welbeck. It’s his second goal of the game.

Updated

Full time: Leeds 2-2 Bournemouth

Every point’s a good one for a newly promoted Premier League team, but Leeds will rue the two that got away. Bournemouth’s admirable start to the season continues.

Updated

Full time: Man City 5-1 Burnley

A comfortable win for City in the end. It was 1-1 after an hour but their class eventually told. Spare a thought for Burnley’s Maxime Esteve, who scored two own-goals.

GOAL! Man City 5-1 Burnley (Yep 90)

Erling Haaland gets his second of the game, his eighth of the Premier League season and his gazillionth for City.

Updated

88 min: Crystal Palace 1-1 Liverpool There was a VAR check for handball against Salah in the build up – but the goal stands!

GOAL! Atletico Madrid 4-2 Real Madrid (Alvarez 64)

Another one for the fabulous Julian Alvarez! How Man City could do with him. Wait, hang on.

90+1 min: Leeds 2-1 Bournemouth Evanilson’s header is shovelled off the line by Longstaff, but did he use his arm? Ah, no matter, a foul has been given against Evanilson.

90 min: Chelsea 1-1 Brighton More VAR controvesy at Chelsea. Apprarently the unsighted Malo Gusto kicked Mitoma in the head, but VAR concluded there was no clear evidence of boot-on-noggin action. We’ll hear more about that I’m sure.

80 min: Crystal Palace 1-0 Liverpool The substitute Eddie Nketiah has spurned a superb chance to make it 2-0, according to Michael Dawson on Soccer Saturday.

88 min: Chelsea 1-1 Brighton It’s all kicking off at Stamford Bridge. Brighton had a penalty appeal turned down but it’s gone to VAR; meanwhile the players are asserting their masculinity in the confrontation style.

75 min: Crystal Palace 1-0 Liverpool “Since Wirtz blew his chance, Liverpool hasn’t threatened at all,” writes Kári Tulinius, who is legally able to watch this game. “There’s still a long way to go in this match, but if Crystal Palace win they’ll be three points off the top. They look like contenders for a Champions League spot, though the lack of a pure creator will probably hamper them.”

If they go deep in Europe – and it’ll be ashock if they don’t – squad depth will be an issue. They’re such an impressive side but I still think a top-half finish would represent an superb season.

Updated

73 min: Crystal Palace 1-0 Liverpool The introduction of Cody Gakpo and Curtis Jones has given Liverpool some impetus. If they equalise soon, another late winner will feel inevitable.

Championship Mamadou Kaly Sene has equalised for the leaders Middlesbrough at Southampton; it’s 1-1 in that game.

GOAL! Chelsea 1-1 Brighton (Welbeck 77)

Second time lucky for Danny Welbeck, who has headed Brighton level from Yankuba Minteh’s cross. Red cards are really costing Chelsea at the moment.

Updated

GOAL! Atletico Madrid 3-2 Real Madrid (Alvarez 50 pen)

1-0 up, 2-1 down – and now Atletico are 3-2 up through Julian Alvarez’s penalty. It was awarded for dangerous play by Arda Guler, whose foot was very high as he hooked a cross away at the far post. Meanwhile…

73 min: Chelsea 1-0 Brighton The substitute Danny Welbeck has missed Brighton’s best chance of the afternoon, shooting just wide.

Championship roundup

Coventry ended their run of three draws as they recorded a convincing 3-0 win over 10-man Birmingham to extend their unbeaten start to the league season to seven games. Brandon Thomas-Asante scored his third goal of the campaign to set the Sky Blues on their way before the visitors were reduced to 10 men when Jack Robinson was sent off for a second bookable offence just before half-time.

59 min: Crystal Palace 1-0 Liverpool Florian Wirtz has missed a brilliant chance to equalise for Liverpool.

GOAL! Man City 3-1 Brighton (Esteve 0g 65)

Two goals in five minutes for City. Oscar Bobb, just on as sub, finishes classily from Phil Foden’s cross to give City a two-goal cushion.

Scratch that – it’s a second own goal for poor Maxime Esteve, who is in danger of becoming the lead in next week’s Knowledge column.

GOAL! Leeds 2-1 Bournemouth (Longstaff 54)

Sean Longstaff’s first goal for Leeds has put them in front at Elland Road! He took it well too, adjusting his feet to slash a bouncing ball into the net from 17 yards.

Home form was always going to be crucial for the promoted clubs; if it stays like this Leeds will have seven points from three games.

Red card! Chalobah sent off

Chelsea have been much the better team but now they’re down to 10 men.

51 min: Chelsea 1-0 Brighton There’s a VAR check for a possible red card after a challenge by Trevoh Chalobah on Diego Gomez.

GOAL! Atletico Madrid 1-2 Real Madrid (Guler 37)

We’ve seen this film before. Real have come from behind to lead through Arda Guler, who made the equaliser for Kylian Mbappe and has just finished expertly from Vinicius Jr’s cross. What a lovely footballer he is, and he’s still only 20.

45+5 min: Crystal Palace 1-0 Liverpool Jean-Philippe Mateta has hit the post with a marvellous long-range effort. It sounds like Palace have been quite magnificent in the first half.

45+3 min: Leeds 1-1 Bournemouth “While I’m absolutely delighted to see Antoine Semenyo still at Bournemouth, I’m also completely baffled as to why he is,” writes Charlie Robinson. “He’s just such a delight to watch running at opponents, and I honestly can’t think of a Premier League player who puts a bigger smile on my face.

“Having kept an eye on the summer’s transfer rumours, I can’t remember him being seriously linked with anyone either. If any Premier League player was due a £50-odd million move this summer, it was him. Maybe he just adores Bournemouth pier? To be fair, it’s a cracker, isn’t it?”

Whether we’re talking teams or piers, Clockwatch journalists are strictly impartial.

GOAL! Atletico Madrid 1-1 Real Madrid (Mbappe 25)

A terrific equaliser for Real in the Madrid derby. After some short passing on the right, Arda Guler opened Atletico up with a beautiful angled pass to put Kylian Mbappe through on goal. I shan’t insult your intelligence by telling you what happened next.

It’s 27 September 1989. No really folks, it is!

“I was at that Celtic v Partizan game (3.24pm) at the old Celtic Park,” writes Simon McMahon. “Gordan Petrić, who five years later was an integral part of the first Dundee United side to win the Scottish Cup, and who also spent a season at Crystal Palace, played as a 20-year-old for Partizan, who were managed that night by Ivan Golac, who was also manager at Tannadice when United beat Rangers in 1994 to lift the Scottish Cup with Petrić in the side.”

Leeds have missed some good chances at Elland Road, and Antoine Semenyo has punished them with his fourth league goal of the season. Thanks Billy, hello everyone. Kick-off is a couple of minutes away, which is just enough time to read Dave Hytner’s report from Brentford.

Right, the teams are walking out around the grounds. Rob Smyth has also emerged from the tunnel, mascot in hand, to take over from me for when the whistle blows.

There was an eye-catching result in the WSL this lunchtime as Aston Villa’s Lucy Parker struck late at the Emirates. Suzanne Wrack’s report is here:

A reminder of the 3pm kick-offs in the Premier League:

Chelsea v Brighton
Crystal Palace v Liverpool
Leeds v Bournemouth
Manchester City v Burnley

We’ll be getting under way in about 10 minutes’ time!

Sid Lowe is at the Metropolitano for today’s Madrid derby. This week he’s been writing about Julián Alvarez, Atlético’s hat-trick hero against Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday:

Asked how Alvarez could score a goal like the winner against Rayo, Simeone’s explanation was simple: “Because he’s very good.” When it was suggested that it had been Lionel Messi-like, he replied: “Well, he’s Julián Alvarez.” There was more, he knew; this was about the person as well as the player. “He is the best player we have got,” the coach said.

Alexander Isak is making his first Premier League start for Liverpool at Selhurst Park. Marc Guéhi is charged with stopping him when, really, he might have expected to be lining up alongside him today:

It speaks volumes for Guéhi’s professionalism that he has picked up where he left off at Palace having already mentally prepared to become a Liverpool player. The first part of his medical had been completed in London on deadline day and a private jet was standing by to take him to Merseyside.

Full-time scores from the early kick-offs:

Premier League
Brentford 3-1 Manchester United (Thiago 8 20, Jensen 90+5; Sesko 26)

Championship
Coventry 3-0 Birmingham (Thomas-Asante 16, Osayi-Samuel 49og, Torp 78)
Swansea 1-1 Millwall (Vipotnik 12; Coburn 45+1)
Wrexham 1-1 Derby (O’Brien 59; Brereton Díaz 72)

WSL
Arsenal 1-1 Aston Villa (Maanum 10; Parker 90+4)

Full-time: Brentford 3-1 Manchester United

Mathias Jensen seals the points for Keith Andrews and Brentford to hand Ruben Amorim that familiar feeling of defeat at Manchester United.

Igor Thiago’s first-half double put Brentford on their way before Benjamin Sesko’s first United goal gave them some hope.

Nathan Collins was penalised for pulling back the returning Bryan Mbeumo in the box but Bruno Fernandes’s penalty was saved by Caoimhin Kelleher. Jensen’s emphatic finish came in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

There is no Cole Palmer for Chelsea today. He’s one of a number of injury absentees Enzo Maresca is having to deal with amid a dip in results:

On the treatment table:
Palmer (groin)
Adarabioyo (calf)
Fofana (concussion)
Colwill (knee)
Essugo (thigh)
Delap (hamstring)

Kyle Walker’s awkward departure from Manchester City doesn’t seem to have affected Pep Guardiola’s opinion of him:

I don’t judge one behaviour over a short period of time. He was unbelievable. One of the greatest full-backs ever. I slept like a baby for the games with Kyle there.

There are eight minutes of stoppage time at Brentford, who still lead Manchester United 2-1 after Bruno Fernandes’s missed penalty. You can join Barry Glendenning for any late drama:
