Crystal Palace team news: Riedewald, Batshuayi and Cahill start, Mateta on bench again

Roy Hodgson has named his starting line up for Crystal Palace's clash against Newcastle United, with Jairo Riedewald and Gary Cahill coming into the starting line up, and Jean-Philippe Mateta is on the bench again.

Vicente Guaita starts in goal, with Cahill joining Scott Dann in the centre of defence. Nathaniel Clyne and Patrick van Aanholt continue at full-back.

Riedewald comes into a midfield two alongside Luka Milivojevic in what looks to be a similar formation to the match against Wolves on Saturday, with a front four of Jordan Ayew, Ebere Eze, Wilfried Zaha and Michy Batshuayi.

There are only seven players among the substitutes for Palace, with Hodgson revealing before the game that the club were going through a sour patch with regard to injuries.

Crystal Palace transfer update, new contracts and Newcastle preview

"[James] McArthur obviously was injured for that game and unfortunately we did pick up a couple of quite serious knocks in the game," Hodgson told reporters.

"So at this moment in time I've got a couple of other players we have to really look at and assess whether they can make it tomorrow.

"And then there's the usual suspects. So the injury situation for us at the moment is not good."

Hodgson also revealed that James Tomkins will be missing for more time after undergoing surgery on a fractured eye socket that he picked up in training.

"The good news is he's had a small operation to make certain that the slight fracture he had under the eye has been taken care of," told reporters when football.london asked about Tomkins' injury.

"That's lifted the eye up as it should do and gives him more chance to close the eye, which was a slight problem at the beginning due to the fracture.

"So that was a successful operation, so that was really good. Obviously it's a nasty injury, but the good news is that he's very positive about it all, and things are looking an awful lot brighter today with regards to James than when the injury happened."

Crystal Palace XI: Guaita; Clyne, Cahill, Dann, Van Aanholt; Milivojevic, Riedewald; Ayew, Eze, Zaha; Batshuayi.

Subs: Butland, Kouyate, Kelly, Mitchell, Townsend, Mateta, Benteke.

Newcastle XI: Darlow; Manquillo, Schar, Clark, Lewis; Hayden, Hendrick, Shelvey; Almiron, Fraser, Wilson.

Subs: Dubravka, Dummett, M. Longstaff, Carroll, Joelinton, Saint-Maximin, Gayle, Krafth, Anderson.
