Crystal Palace team news confirmed as Wilfried Zaha and Gary Cahill start, Eberechi Eze benched

Wilfried Zaha starts for Crystal Palace against Brighton, recovering from a groin strain picked up on international duty to take his place. He is joined in the first XI by Gary Cahill, who has also made a long-awaited return from injury.

Jairo Riedewald also makes his first start of the Premier League season, with Cahill partnering Cheikhou Kouyate in the centre of defence.

Vicente Guaita starts in goal, with Joel Ward at right-back, a central duo of Cahill and Kouyate and Tyrick Mitchell continuing at left-back.

In midfield, Andros Townsend continues on the right with Jeffrey Shlupp on the left flank as Eberechi Eze drops to the bench. Riedewald moves into the midfield alongside James McArthur to replace the injured James McCarthy.

Roy Hodgson press conference ahead of Brighton

And in attack, Michy Batshuayi partners Zaha, who has recovered from a groin strain to take his place against Brighton, with no place for Jordan Ayew in the squad.

Hodgson revealed in his pre-match press conference that Cahill, Tomkins, Van Aanholt and Schlupp were all back in contention for the clash, though McCarthy was out and Wayne Hennessey could miss out on first-team action for some time.

"[McCarthy] came back injured from the Ireland squad with a muscular injury, so he's another one who at the moment has returned injured," Hodgson told reporters. "He certainly will not be available this weekend, for us.

"He had a scan in Ireland which they didn't think necessarily showed any damage to the muscle.

"The scan that we carried out when he came back because he was still feeling it did show a Grade 1 injury to his hamstring and as a result he is unavailable this weekend.

"Normally those take between two and three weeks, so I'll have to wait and see. He won't be available at the weekend and I'd be very surprised if he's training in the early part of next week.

"Hennessey is still waiting for a scan and waiting to see a specialist - so I wouldn't even dream of putting a projection or making comments on the state of that until I have those.

"Wayne's is a bit higher [than the hamstring], what they call a rec-fem. I don't know, it's the muscle at the front that you kick with very high up.

"It's an injury there for him. Which of course is the same injury [as Connor Wickham] picked up in training last Monday."

Crystal Palace XI: Guaita; Ward, Kouyate, Cahill, Mitchell; Townsend, Riedewald, McArthur, Schlupp; Batshuayi, Zaha.

Subs: Henderson, Van Aanholt, Sakho, Clyne, Milivojevic, Eze, Benteke.
