Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha escapes fan backlash on Selhurst Park return after transfer saga

Wilfried Zaha avoided any backlash from Crystal Palace fans as he made his return to Selhurst Park after handing in a transfer request this week.

The forward was named as a substitute for the Eagles’ first game of the season, against the side he was on the verge of joining in Everton.

On the eve of Palace’s Premier League opener, manager Roy Hodgson had warned Zaha that he must front up to any negative reaction from supporters after his attempted move away turned ugly.

The 26-year-old resulted to handing in his transfer request on Wednesday, with the window closing a day later, after chairman Steve Parish and the club’s American owners knocked back offers from Arsenal and latterly Everton with none meeting their valuation of more than £80million.

Hodgson holds no concerns over Zaha downing tools having been denied his move away.

“I trust him totally, this is a disappointment he knows he has to get over,” the former England manager said.

“It is a problem that he has had, a difference of opinion.

"That has now passed and I’m expecting Wilf to go out and do on the training pitches and in matches what he has done during the two years that I have been here.”
