Crystal Palace star delivers frank assessment on the performance vs Southampton

Crystal Palace midfielder James McCarthy has admitted that the Eagles "weren't at the races" in their 2-0 defeat at home against Southampton.

The Eagles were well beaten by the Saints, with goals from Nathan Redmond and Stuart Armstrong helping Ralph Hasenhuttl's side to victory at Selhurst Park.

For Palace, it was a disappointing result and performance, with the Eagles failing to register a shot on target as they lost out at home for a fourth time this season - and for the first time at home against an opponent outside of the current top three.

And McCarthy could not hide his disappointment at the Eagles' performance in south London.

January transfer window: everything you need to know

“I thought from the first minute we were a bit flat, we weren’t at it," he told Palace TV.

“It was disappointing and each and every one of us know it’s not good enough. Obviously everyone’s played on Saturday, but we went to the champions [Manchester City] and put in a hell of a performance. That’s not easy to get away from and we wanted to win the game [against Southampton] and push on but unfortunately we weren’t at the races.

"They [Southampton] started brightly, made a few changes and unfortunately, with the squad we’ve got just now, we’ve got a lot of injuries and we would have been happy to make a few changes maybe and push on.

“As I say, we’ve got a lot of injuries in the squad but there’s no point making excuses. We’re put out there and we need to put on a good performance and unfortunately each and every one of us, we didn’t perform.

"They were good, but as a squad, as a team, we know we’re a lot better than that."
