Crystal Palace sign Sunderland goalkeeper released this summer

Former Sunderland goalkeeper Remi Matthews has signed for Crystal Palace after leaving Wearside this summer.

The shot-stopper was one of several players released by the Black Cats in a summer clear-out, having spent just one season at the Stadium of Light.

Matthews was signed by former manager Phil Parkinson following Jon McLaughlin's move to Rangers, and initially was set to battle it out for Lee Burge for the No 1 spot.

However, Burge soon became the regular goalkeeper, and Matthews was restricted to a bench role for the majority of the season before his release at the end of the season.

Now, however, he has completed a move to Premier League Crystal Palace with new manager Patrick Vieira looking for bolster his goalkeeper options.

Matthews is expected to be third choice at Selhurst Park.

The 27-year-old came through the ranks at Norwich, but it was at Bolton where he linked up with Parkinson, moving to Wearside as a free agent in 2020.

He made 11 appearances for the Black Cats, although only six in League One.
