Crystal Palace set to seal transfer for Chelsea defender Marc Guehi on permanent deal

Crystal Palace are set to seal a permanent transfer for Chelsea defender Marc Guehi on a five-year contract with the defender already completing a medical.

football.london understands that the 21-year-old will join Palace on a five-year deal, as reported by The Athletic.

Guehi will become Palace's third summer signing after Michael Olise joined the club from Reading in a deal worth £8million, and back-up goalkeeper Remi Matthews was added to the ranks following the exits of Wayne Hennessey and Stephen Henderson.

The acquisition of another young star who proved himself in the Championship last season has followed part of a growing trend among Palace's top transfer deals of late, with Olise and Eberechi Eze two of the standout talents in the second tier over recent years.

Guehi spent 18 months on loan at Swansea, and is understood to have had high levels of interest from a number of clubs in the Premier League and abroad, though most were keen on short-term deals.

Palace's bid to sign the youngster is understood to have included a future sell-on fee for the England Under-21 international as well as an option for Chelsea to match any bids on a potential future move.

When Guehi completes his move to Selhurst Park, he is likely to move straight into the starting XI for the beginning of the Premier League season, with the club now short on centre-backs.

Palace currently have only James Tomkins as a recognised senior centre-back among their ranks, though Cheikhou Kouyate did play there for most of the 2020/21 season.

The likes of Scott Dann, Mamadou Sakho and Gary Cahill were all left out of contract at the beginning of July and while chairman Steve Parish stated that some players will be coming back with negotiations ongoing, Palace no longer hold exclusive rights to any of the players.

"Obviously we haven't quite concluded all of the out of contract players," Parish told the club website. "There will be some players coming back and hopefully we get the right blend in the squad."
