Crystal Palace's Ryan Inniss could face lengthy ban after allegedly biting West Ham academy player

Crystal Palace defender Ryan Inniss could face a lengthy ban after allegedly biting West Ham academy player Reece Hannam while on loan at Newport County.

Inniss, who joined the League Two side on a season-long loan last month, was sent off in injury time of last night’s 5-4 EFL Trophy defeat by West Ham Under-21s, having been introduced off the bench in the second half.

Newport boss Michael Flynn said: “Their player said he got bitten, so I’ll have a look at that and find out what happened. If he has, it’s inexcusable and I won’t be fighting his corner.”

The straight red card shown to the 24-year-old, who has been sent off once before in his career, results in an automatic three-match ban.

However, the FA can increase sanctions where deemed necessary. The governing body had until 1pm today to inform Newport if they are considering imposing a longer ban.

West Ham are not expected to push for further sanctions.

In 2013, then-Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was banned for 10 matches for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic.

Newport are the ninth club Inniss has been loaned to during his Palace career, having made one senior appearance for the Eagles, a Carabao Cup win over Swansea last year.
