Crystal Palace respond to fan criticism over season ticket procedure and announce fresh changes

Crystal Palace have announced changes to the season ticket renewal process following concerns raised by fans, including influential fanzine Five Year Plan (FYP).

Senior concessions season ticket holders wishing to defer their ticket for a year will now no longer have to provide any evidence of health status to do so.

However, all other season ticket holders will still need to provide evidence that they or someone that they live with or care for are "clinically extremely vulnerable from VOCID-19)".

Palace have also extended the deadline for renewing tickets until Thursday September 17, with general sale tickets pushed back until the following Tuesday.

The club confirmed their season ticketing process for the 2020/21 campaign on Saturday amid the ongoing battle against coronavirus, with uncertainties still looming over when fans will be allowed back into grounds - and how many will be welcomed back when they are.

Premier League clubs are hopeful that fans would be allowed back into grounds sooner rather than later following a successful trial by Brighton during a pre-season friendly against Chelsea.

Southampton chief executive Martin Semmens had stated that the club were hoping to run their own trial this month, potentially in the Carabao Cup.

However, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that test events will be suspended in a major blow to Premier League and Football League sides hoping to welcome back supporters into the stadium.

Palace fans are being invited to renew their season tickets with matches being allocated "on as fair a basis as possible" to supporters when they are allowed to return.

But a number of issues arose among supporters. As well as the problem surrounding shielding and potentially paying money for a ticket that supporters may not be able to use, fans were unconvinced by one method of payment.

Fans hoping to pay for the 2020/21 tickets by instalments are required to use a company called V12 Retail Finance to spread out the cost of a season ticket over the course of the year.

However, it is only when reaching the completion page of the process that fans are told a credit check will be performed.

As told by FYP, some fans have already seen problems with the procedure that means they will not be acquiring their usual season ticket this year.

The fanzine called on the club to implement new changes to the ticketing process, with the current method risking alienation of long-term supporters.

"We ask that Palace reconsider the options made available to supporters, providing options that are accessible, considerate and fair," FYP said in a statement.

"There is still time to make such changes. Share this article on social media with the club if you also think Palace should Rethink It."
