Crystal Palace respond to claims fans spat at Brighton players in fractious post-match scenes

Crystal Palace have responded to allegations that a number of their supporters were seen spitting at Brighton players and throwing drinks and coins at them as they left the pitch on Monday night.

Tensions had flared between the two sets of players and fans at the end of the match following Neal Maupay's stoppage-time equaliser, which cancelled out Wilfried Zaha's penalty from the first half.

According to a report from the Mail, some Brighton players were allegedly spat at as they walked past the home fans towards the dressing rooms, while coins and drinks were also apparently thrown at them too, it is claimed.

Crystal Palace have now addressed the accusations, and have said they are looking into a number of incidents that they say could lead to action being taken against individuals.

"Monday night's match was a fantastic, lively derby with an incredible atmosphere and a dramatic ending and emotions were running high amongst both sets of supporters," said a spokesperson from the club.

"We are reviewing a handful of incidents and, if we find evidence of unacceptable behaviour, we will take necessary action."

After the match, Brighton manager Graham Potter said the atmosphere was "intimidating" and that there wasn't enough security present to deal with the problem.

"That's how it is here," said the Seagulls boss. "With the goal going in at that time, there are emotions, passion which you would expect. There wasn't a massive amount of security there. But it's a little bit intimidating."

The Mail also reports that the FA are looking into matters on the pitch following a confrontation between players at full-time. Joel Ward and James McArthur were both seen arguing with Brighton keeper Robert Sanchez, who had moments earlier celebrated Maupay's equaliser in front of the Palace home support.
