Crystal Palace have rejected a bid of around £3m from Bournemouth for Glenn Murray, with the Premier League new boys expected to return with an improved offer after the weekend.

Murray, who scored seven Premier League goals last season as Palace finished 10th, is keen to remain at Selhurst Park but has yet to be offered an extension to his current contract, which expires in 2017. That was signed in January, although it came before a run of six goals in six games between February and April.

The 31-year-old is expected to start for Alan Pardew’s side in the season opener against Norwich at Carrow Road on Saturday despite the arrival of Patrick Bamford on loan from Chelsea and Connor Wickham from Sunderland.

However, with several of Pardew’s first-team squad including James McArthur and Scott Dann having been rewarded with improved contracts this summer, Murray would like to negotiate a new deal to bring him in line with some of the top earners. Those talks have stalled in recent weeks, with the Bournemouth manager, Eddie Howe, believed to have first registered their interest in the player at the start of the summer.

Murray, who joined Palace on a free transfer in 2011, is understood to be open to moving to the south coast but would prefer to stay at a club where he has scored 45 goals in 109 appearances.
