Crystal Palace poised to make shock move for former Sunderland back-up goalkeeper

New Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira is lining up a shock swoop for goalkeeper Remi Matthews.

Matthews is a free agent having seen his contract at League One side Sunderland expire.

He spent just a solitary season at the Stadium of Light, playing 11 times - six of those appearances coming in the league.

The 27-year-old was previously at Bolton Wanderers. Prior to that he was at Norwich but never made an appearance for the Canaries and was loaned out multiple times.

It has been a nomadic career for the stopper, taking in spells at Plymouth, Doncaster and Hamilton, but Vieira now looks set to hand him an unexpected Premier League lifeline.

It is largely expected that Matthews will be third choice at Selhurst Park, behind Vicente Guaita and Jack Butland.

Former Arsenal legend Vieira has a big rebuilding job on his hands at Palace.

The Eagles released a clutch of players this summer and so far only Reading's Michael Olise has arrived. Nevertheless, Vieira is excited about the challenge that lies ahead.

"I am really excited to have this opportunity to return to the Premier League, and manage this great football club, as we begin a new chapter together.

"It is a project that is really appealing to me, having spoken a lot with the Chairman and Sporting Director about their ambition and plans for the whole club including the Academy.

"The club has fantastic foundations in place after many years in the Premier League, and I hope we can make further improvements and continue to drive the club forward."

Matthews has never featured in the top flight, and has only made 18 appearances in the Championship, with Bolton in 2018-19.
