Crystal Palace player ratings vs Everton: Ayew and Meyer show promise as Zaha returns in draw

Crystal Palace but in a battling display on the opening day of the new season as they drew 0-0 with ten-man Everton at Selhurst Park this afternoon (Saturday).

Both sides had their chances in the game, with Gylfi Sigurdsson missing a great opportunity for Everton early on, while the visitors had two shots cleared off the line.

At the other end, Max Meyer and Jordan Ayew both went close for Palace, with Jordan Pickford denying them both with two fine saves.

Everton did have Morgan Schneiderlin sent off for two bookable offences in the 76th minute, but Palace were not able to capitalise.

Here’s how we rated the Palace players at Selhurst Park.

Vicente Guaita

The Spaniard made a superb reaction save to deny Seamus Coleman from close range in the first half. He didn't have too much to do, but always looked comfortable. 7

Patrick van Aanholt

The Dutchman was not at his best, with Everton getting some joy down the right hand side through Richarlison and Seamus Coleman. But he made a vital goalline clearance in the second half to deny Gylfi Sigurdsson. 6

Scott Dann

Started in defence, and kept Dominic Calvert-Lewin quiet for the most part. 6

Martin Kelly

The former Liverpool man made some timely interceptions and clearances from the heart of the defence. 7

Joel Ward

Palace's only senior right-back had his hands full against the tricky Bernard, but coped well, in his first competitive game since Aaron Wan-Bissaka's exit this summer. 7

Luka Milivojevic

Fresh from signing a new four-year contract, the skipper put in a committed display, making several crucial tackles in midfield to break up play. He was booked, but put in a steady showing. 6

James McArthur

The Scottish midfielder put his foot in in midfield, making some combative challenges to win the ball for his side. 7

Max Meyer

After playing a full part in pre-season, he looked lively on the left hand side of midfield, going close shortly before half time with a shot that was deflected over, after cutting in onto his right foot. 8

Andros Townsend

The former Tottenham and Newcastle man was kept quiet in the first half, but grew into the game in the second half. Failed to make a telling contribution though. 6

Jordan Ayew

The only summer signing to start, with the former Swansea City man given the nod as Wilfried Zaha was named on the bench. He put a shift in and worked hard for the team, with little reward. Had one good chance early in the second half, but was denied by Jordan Pickford. But he earned a good reception from the crowd for his efforts. 8

Christian Benteke

The Belgian striker was in the right place at the right time in a defensive position as he headed Richarlison's effort off of the line early on. He also worked hard up front as he looked to create openings. 7

Substitutes

Wilfried Zaha (on for Ayew, 64)

He came on to a superb reception from the fans midway through the second half, proving that the Selhurst Park faithful are still supportive of the Ivory Coast international, despite the events of the past week. He didn't have much of an impact from the bench though. 5

Premier League 2019/20 - key fixtures

Connor Wickham (on for Benteke, 83)

The former Sunderland man was given the final seven minutes off the bench, but made little impact. 4
