Crystal Palace player ratings as Roy Hodgson's midfield gamble backfires with Wilfried Zaha out

Vicente Guaita: Untroubled for much of the match. Made a decent stop from a Joelinton shot and then had to be quick to stop Ritchie's free-kick in the second half. Could do nothing really about either of Newcastle's late goals. 6

Nathaniel Clyne: Looked to get forward often and helped to create an overload in the first half. Was troubled in the second half after Townsend's exit, with nobody helping to cover the runner. 6

Gary Cahill: Looked relaxed enough dealing with Wilson, even if the striker got the better of him on occasion. Was disappointed to head over from a corner in the second half. 6

Scott Dann: Got a vital touch to take a cross away from Joelinton and read the game well to make a good interception later in the first half when Newcastle looked to counter. A real sloppy just before half-time that gifted Newcastle a chance with a poor pass. 6

Patrick van Aanholt: Looked frustrated at times in the first half with nobody taking a chance to try and pick him out on the left. Lots of ambition but fairly sloppy on the ball. Put in a decent cross for Benteke. 5

Andros Townsend: Another performance that would leave detractors wondering why he was starting. Plenty of effort as usual, but bar one corner his deliveries were off target. 5

Cheikhou Kouyate: Came into midfield in place of Riedewald and Palace did look to lack a little invention from midfield at times. Came close to opening the scoring in the late stages, but his shot was blocked behind. 5

James McArthur: The spotlight was on Kouyate moving into the midfield, but given Riedewald's performances this season there was also a bit of pressure on McArthur to deliver in the newfound competition for places. Was bafflingly pushed wide on the right before being subbed. 6

Ebere Eze: Grew into the first half and picked up some nice positions. Had the first real shot for Palace, stinging Darlow's gloves from distance. Was a threat in the second half and helped as Palace tried to work the ball into the area. 6

Jeffrey Schlupp: Playing in a somewhat unfamiliar attacking role, he showed a couple of nice touches early on, getting Fernandez booked after a cynical block. Forced a good save with his first true shot. Was pushed further back as subs were made. 6

Jordan Ayew: Worked hard and barely got a sniff of a chance. Managed to get onto a Schlupp pass but could only roll it past the post. 5

Subs:

Christian Benteke: Came on with around half an hour remaining and immediately made an impact in terms of holding up the ball. Had a header over shortly after his introduction, and another one that forced a great stop from Darlow. 7

Jairo Riedewald: Could count himself unlucky to be on the bench. Came on and helped Palace to move it forward quicker. Made a great tackle to stop a Newcastle counter. 6

Michy Batshuayi: Came tantalisingly close to getting the winner, but could not get on the end of Van Aanholt's cross.
