Crystal Palace owner outlines the bleak forecast for Premier League clubs if season isn't completed

Crystal Palace owner Steve Paris believes football clubs could be "like the airlines" as soon as August if the Premier League doesn't return behind closed doors.

The 20 top-flight clubs are still in discussions about a potential June restart to complete the 2019/20 season.

With all matches set to be played behind closed doors due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, clubs will lose out on significant matchday revenue.

If the season isn't complete, Premier League clubs also risk losing TV broadcast revenue, which Parish believes could leave them in serious problems as early as August.

"I personally believe in six weeks times, eight weeks time that it may give everyone a lift," Parish told Sky Sports' The Football Show.

"We need to know the environment. Right now, we're just planning and working out how we can play a game that is traditionally played in front of crowds. First of all, without crowds, what does that look like, how can we make players safe? There's a lot to work through, whether it's to finish this season or participating in next."

He added: "I think the important debate, I genuinely don't think people are thinking clearly about the ramifications. If we don't play, we are essentially throwing ourselves at the mercy of our customers.

"We will be in a position where fundamentally we are airlines from August. That's a doomsday scenario but I don't have any visibility on income past August and I don't understand why anyone would pay us if we can't put the product on for us."
