Crystal Palace optimistic Wilfried Zaha ban will be overturned on appeal

Crystal Palace are optimistic Wilfried Zaha will win his appeal against a further one-match ban for improper conduct following his red card against Southampton.

Zaha was booked for squaring up to James Ward-Prowse and then shown a second yellow card for sarcastically applauding referee Andre Marriner. He was fined £10,000 for continuing to mock the official as he walked off. The winger has served a one-match ban but will miss an additional game should he fail with his appeal. Boss Roy Hodgson hopes the FA will take the view a one-match ban is sufficient.

Palace’s reliance on Zaha was highlighted on Saturday when his late goal earned a 1-1 draw with West Ham.

Hodgson says Gareth Southgate has not spoken to him about an England call-up for Aaron Wan-Bissaka. “We often talk about the English players we have,” he said. “I wait for that actual moment when he says, ‘right, I want your opinion on how good Wan-Bissaka can be at international level’.”
