Crystal Palace linked with surprise move for Everton star Theo Walcott on transfer deadline day

Crystal Palace have been linked with a shock move for Theo Walcott on transfer deadline day.

Roy Hodgson has admitted in the weeks leading up to the deadline that a striker is the club's priority, amid links to a number of forwards and wide midfielders.

Rhian Brewster was linked with a move to Selhurst Park, despite chairman Steve Parish's protestations on social media about reports stating the club had made a bid for the 20-year-old.

However, it is understood that Palace were reluctant to move forward with a transfer which involved a buy-back clause being inserted for the Liverpool youngster.

Sheffield United had no such qualms, and as such the forward completed a deal worth around £23million to Brammall Lane, with Liverpool having the option to take him back in the next three years.

Palace have also been strongly linked with a move for Said Benrahma, and football.london understand that the Championship side are prepared to sell the Algeria international.

However, they are asking for £25million for the talented attacker, and as yet Palace have not made their move.

Brentford have already sold on star striker Ollie Watkins this summer to Aston Villa for £30million, and as such have no need to lower their valuation for Benrahma.

The Athletic now report that Everton are expecting Theo Walcott to leave Goodison Park before Monday's deadline.

Palace are named among the clubs carrying an interest in the 31-year-old, who is the Toffees' highest-paid player.

Since Carlo Ancelotti's arrival at the club, Walcott has been on the periphery of the squad, and is no longer in the first-team plans following.

According to the report, Everton are expecting "little or no fee" for Walcott, with any departure dependent on whether the buying club are willing to meet the England international's wage demands.

Walcott's adaptability mean he could play in either a striker's role or as a winger in Roy Hodgson's side, with the manager currently preferring a 4-4-2 formation.

However, Palace are apparently facing competition from Burnley, Fulham and Walcott's boyhood club Southampton.
