Crystal Palace injury news as Patrick Vieira dealt fresh blow ahead of trip to Brighton

Crystal Palace will be without five senior players for their trip to the Amex on Friday night to face fierce rivals Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Eagles head into the game sat 12th in the Premier League table, three places and four points behind the Seagulls who sit ninth.

This is the second time the two rivals have played each other already this season, with Albion snatching a late equaliser at Selhurst Park back in September to earn the Seagulls a 1-1 draw.

Wilfried Zaha scored Palace's goal in that game from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time, but the winger and regular thorn in Brighton's side is not available for this game due to his involvement at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Ivory Coast.

Palace stars Jordan Ayew (Ghana) and Cheikhou Kouyate (Senegal) are both also at the tournament in Cameroon and will miss the trip to the south coast.

There was some hope that veteran midfielder James McArthur might be nearing a comeback in time for this game after suffering a hamstring tear back in November.

However, Patrick Vieira confirmed in his pre-match press conference on Thursday that the Scotsman was still unavailable for a couple of weeks and still had "a long way to go" in his recovery.

The Eagles boss also confirmed that Palace had lost another senior player to injury as centre-back James Tomkins will miss the game at the Amex as well.

The 32-year-old has acted as cover for Marc Guehi and Joachim Andersen so far this season and started six games in a row over the festive period when the latter of the pair was injured.

Speaking on Tomkins' injury, Vieira said: "It is an injury and we need to wait and see how he will improve. Not having him with us is losing an experienced player in the dressing room and on the field.

"We need to evaluate the injury week after week. Hopefully, it'll be a couple of weeks not months."

Brighton manager Graham Potter has meanwhile confirmed that Enock Mwepu and Lewis Dunk will both miss the game on Friday.

Albion are boosted by the return of centre-back Adam Webster, however, with the defender sitting out of Saturday's FA Cup win over West Bromwich Albion.

Brighton are also missing Yves Bissouma who is away with Mali at AFCON but recently recalled midfielder Moises Caicedo from Beerschot who is available to play.
