Crystal Palace handed crucial selection blow ahead of Newcastle United clash

Crystal Palace will be without talisman Wilfried Zaha for this Friday's Premier League clash with Newcastle United after testing positive for COVID-19.

Zaha was left out of Crystal Palace's squad to face Burnley on Monday night with Michy Batshuayi replacing him in the starting XI.

Just moments after releasing the official team news for the clash in Lancashire, Palace confirmed that the winger has been forced to pull out of the squad and enter self-isolation.

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson confirmed that Zaha has tested positive although he is well.

"He has tested positive unfortunately for coronavirus so is self-isolating, and is awaiting the results of the next test," Hodgson said.

"He is not feeling particularly ill, but unfortunately the test proved (positive), and he is following the procedures."

Zaha was set to make his 200th Premier League appearance at Turf Moor but his place in the Palace XI but he will now miss Friday's game against Newcastle too.

The Ivorian winger has scored twice in 11 matches against the Magpies and has registered one assist.

Palace beat Newcastle 1-0 in the corresponding fixture last season, with Patrick van Aanholt's first-half winner proving decisive.

The Magpies haven't won at Selhurst Park in the league since December 2013, when goals from Yoann Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa helped to seal a 3-0 victory.
