Crystal Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey set to contest FA charge for alleged Nazi salute

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey is expected to contest his FA charge for appearing to make a Nazi salute.

Hennessey was pictured seemingly making the gesture in a photo posted on Instagram by team-mate Max Meyer. The 31-year-old, however, said he was shouting at the person taking the picture and “put my hand over my mouth to make the sound carry”.

Palace boss Roy Hodgson backed Hennessey and said he “totally believed” his explanation. Hennessey could face a minimum five-match ban if he is found guilty. He has until January 31 to respond to the charge.

Hennessey denied he was making a Nazi salute this month. He said on Twitter: “It has been brought to my attention that frozen in a moment by the camera this looks like I am making a completely inappropriate type of salute. I would never ever do that.”

Hennessey is injured and will not face Tottenham in the FA Cup on Sunday.
