Crystal Palace given huge academy boost as star outlines 'ideal scenario'

Crystal Palace are now just eight days away from a return to Premier League action.

The Eagles, like all other top flight clubs, have not played a game in the Premier League since March, with professional football in England suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But the Premier League is set to return next week, with Aston Villa facing Sheffield United and Manchester City hosting Arsenal in the first games back, on Wednesday, June 17.

Palace are back in training preparing for a return to action against AFC Bournemouth on Saturday, June 20, with the game scheduled to be shown live on the BBC, kicking off at 7.45pm.

Premier League TV fixtures in June

Below, we take a look at the Palace morning headlines for Friday, June 12.

Academy boost

Crystal Palace have been formally granted planning permission to redevelop their academy by Bromley Council, following approval from the Greater London Authority.

Work is set to commence creating new classrooms and office space for 220 young players and staff.

The renovation will also include a state of the art gym, while the club say enhancements to pitches have already begun - including a covered pitch, work for which will begin in August.

The club state that all work on the project is expected to be complete by the end of summer in 2021, and that they have formally submitted an application to the Premier League to be considered for Category 1 status - the highest Academy status possible. Assessment is due in August.

McCarthy's ideal scenario

James McCarthy says there is "no reason" why Crystal Palace should not be aiming to finish in a European place this season.

With Manchester City currently facing a European football ban, Manchester United are currently sitting in the last Champions League place in 5th spot in the Premier League.

Roy Hodgson's side are just six points behind United, and McCarthy says that while the players are not focusing on where they will finish just yet, it would be a fantastic achievement.

"Obviously that would be an ideal scenario, but we won't get carried away," McCarthy told BBC Radio 5Live.

"We know we've got a lot of tough games to come and we'll take it a game at a time. But as I've said before, we need to make sure we're looking up the table instead of behind us.

"Within this squad we know that we can push on this season and make sure we finish strongly. There's no reason why not but at the same time, we won't look too far ahead.
"We're on a good run and we need to get that momentum back and go again."
