Crystal Palace fans will love what Peter Ramage said about the play-off semi-final vs Brighton

Former Crystal Palace defender Peter Ramage has admitted that Brighton & Hove Albion's fans played their part in inspiring the Eagles to victory in the Championship play-offs back in 2013.

Palace defeated their arch-rivals in the semi-finals of the play-offs on their way to promotion to the Premier League, with the Eagles winning 2-0 in the second leg at the Amex Stadium after a goalless first leg at Selhurst Park.

Wilfried Zaha netted both goals for Ian Holloway's men to send Palace through to the final at Wembley, where they beat Watford 1-0 thanks to a Kevin Phillips penalty to earn a place in the top flight.

And Ramage insists that Palace were given extra motivation to beat Brighton ahead of the second leg.

Coronavirus: How has sport been affected?

“There was a little bit of doubt because they [Brighton & Hove Albion] were hot favourites and had beaten us 3-0 in the league fairly recently," Ramage said in an interview with Palace's club website.

"We kind of felt that they had the advantage being at the Amex for the second leg. The odds were stacked against us.

“But then you drive in to the Amex and you see the Brighton flags pre-emptively saying ‘Wembley 2013’ and that makes you think: these people are taking the p*** out of us here. They think they’ve won the game.

“And that motivated us.”

That was not all though as Palace entered their changing room at the Amex Stadium, only to find excrement on the floor near the toilets and showers.

The incident was dubbed 'poogate' by the national media, with the-then Brighton manager Gus Poyet writing an email to staff afterwards to try and find out who was responsible.

The identity of the person has been debated ever since, with many urban myths, although former Palace defender Paddy McCarthy told the Croydon Advertiser two years later who was responsible for the scandal.

"The dressing room scandal at Brighton was thanks to our coach driver, who couldn't control himself," he was quoted as saying.

"He tried to clean it up, but just made it worse."

One thing is for certain, it left Eagles boss Holloway fuming at the time, as Ramage recalls.

“We didn’t know what was going on. Me and Brian the kit man had gone in to drop the kit off earlier in the afternoon and the stench was evident before you walked in," he said, in the interview with the Palace club website.

“I’ve been in some pubs but this smell was incredible. We walked round and saw what was lying in the toilet area. It was absolutely disgusting.”

“Ollie went absolutely berserk. He went mental. We were there an hour and a half before the game. They’ve got to clean up, but we’ve got to get ready. It disrupted our preparations somewhat but fuelled our animosity even more.

“Ollie didn’t need to say anything. Our team talk was done.”

And Ramage said that it had been a factor on the night as the Eagles progressed to the final at the expense of their arch-rivals.

“It was funny to find out that basically our driver had eaten a bit of bad food," he said.

"God knows what he had done to try and clean it up, it was carnage but it got us to Wembley!”
