Crystal Palace fans organise walk to Stamford Bridge to raise awareness of mental health and suicide

A group of football supporters have organised a walk to Stamford Bridge ahead of Crystal Palace's Premier League match against Chelsea this weekend in order to raise awareness of mental health and male suicide.

The latest 'Walk And Talk' event departs The Beer House Pub at London Victoria at 10:15am GMT on Saturday and is due to arrive at Stamford Bridge - a distance of 4.2 miles - at 11:30.

The walk is all-inclusive and organisers encourage anyone to take part regardless of age, ability, gender or club allegiance, with stops along the route strategically designed to take place near train and tube stations to allow others to join in easily.

Speakers and representatives from the Samaritans, British Transport Police and several prominent rail companies will also be in attendance with a particular focus on the Samaritans' National Rail-backed 'Real People, Real Stories' campaign and suicide prevention on the railway.

After the growing success of the campaign last season, a second Arsenal Walk and Talk to the Emirates Stadium took place on October 27 and attracted 180 fans.

"These #WalkAndTalk events are about recognition of the issues and uniting football fans as one to come together to try and make a difference," said event organiser Paul Price.

"Not only do the #WalkAndTalk events raise awareness of these issues, but they also create environments for people of all ages, backgrounds and genders to connect with others, talk about how they are feeling and demonstrate that it is OK to open up if you are in a bad place and in need of some support.

"Undertaking the event on a match day helps to bring together a higher number of people, uniting opposing fans and sending out a very powerful message in a world where football fans can be too easily stereotyped in negative ways."
