Crystal Palace are facing a fresh setback in their opposition to having five substitutes available in each Premier League match.
The Eagles were one of ten Premier League clubs who voted against the proposal last December, where a majority of 14 clubs was needed in order to push the idea through.
However, despite overcoming that attempt for change, it seems like this is far from over as today the Times reported that the temporary rule allowing teams to make five changes in games is set to become permanent.
The change would still allow competitions to opt for only three subs, as is currently the case with England's top flight, but there would be more pressure on the Premier League to follow the rest of the game.
The extra subs have already been implemented temporarily in many competitions across Europe, including the Champions League and Europa League, while clubs in the Carabao Cup fourth round this week have also been permitted to make five substitutions.
The Premier League increased their quota of substitutes to five during Project Restart in 2020, but reverted back to three for last season and the current campaign.
Crystal Palace voted against making the proposals permanent last Christmas and were backed up in their opinion by Aston Villa, Burnley, Fulham, Leicester City, Leeds United, Newcastle United, Sheffield United, West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Palace's manager last season Roy Hodgson was vocal about his thoughts on the proposal, which he said at the time would hurt clubs of similar standing to the Eagles.
"I don't veer away from that original thought that for teams like ourselves the five subs will not be an advantage, it will be a disadvantage," said the former Palace boss. "On the other hand, I have a lot of sympathy for these teams who are playing so many games.
"I don't want to be the one standing at the front of the barricades with a flag saying this is all wrong. It isn't all wrong and it isn't all right.
"The bottom line is we are all interested in what is going to help us get a few more points at the end of the day, five subs won't help us get more points that's for sure."
