Crystal Palace were knocked out of the Carabao Cup in the second round after losing a mammoth penalty shootout to Championship side Bournemouth.
A poor game finished 0-0 after ninety minutes but came alive when it went to spot kicks, with a total of 24 penalties needed to separate the sides, the Cherries running out 11-10 winners to set up a third round meeting with holders Manchester City.
Roy Hodgson handed a first Palace start to summer signing Eberechi Eze, while Michy Batshuayi was also included in an XI that included ten changes from the weekend win over Southampton, with only Jeffrey Schlupp surviving.
Despite the lack of goals in regulation time, both teams were lethal from the spot, with all ten outfield players on each side converting at the first time of asking.
That took it down to the goalkeepers and when Wayne Hennessey saved from opposite number Asmir Begovic he had the chance to be the hero from 12 yards, only to blaze his own effort miles over the bar.
That forced Bournemouth’s first taker, David Brooks, to return for a second effort and while he rose to the challenge, coolly converting, Luka Milivojevic could not do likewise for the Eagles, his strike kept out by an excellent one-handed stop from Begovic.
