Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson aiming for serious transfer talks this summer

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson says he will be looking to bolster his squad during this summer’s transfer window, despite the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Palace have been notoriously thrifty in the transfer market over the past couple of seasons, and barely made a dent in the £50millon they received when selling Aaron Wan-Bissaka to Manchester United last summer.

The arrivals of Jordan Ayew and James McCarthy for small sums were Hodgson’s most significant outgoings, with arguably his best piece of business coming in keeping Wilfried Zaha at the club amid interest from Arsenal.

Despite the lack of spending, Hodgson has steered the club clear of relegation danger and within four points of Wolves in sixth place, sparking talk of an unlikely push for Europe ahead of this week’s restart.

However, the Eagles have one of the oldest squads in the top flight and Hodgson is under no illusions about thee need to refresh this summer.

“The investment that we’ve been able to do in the last few years hasn’t been as big or extensive as anyone at the club would have liked,” Hodgson said, speaking exclusively to BT Sport.

“I’m hoping that now once we get going we’ll be sitting down and talking very seriously about the type of players who are on the market and the type of players we would like to attract to the club.”
