Crystal Palace boost as young star agrees new four-year contract amid Arsenal interest

Tyrick Mitchell has agreed a new deal with Crystal Palace that will keep him at the club until 2025.

The 21-year-old left-back has been handed improved terms as a reward for the progress he has made in establishing himself as a key part of Roy Hodgson’s first-team plans.

He has made 13 appearances this season and has kept Holland international Patrick van Aanholt out of the starting line-up on several occasions.

Arsenal looked at signing Mitchell in January, as well as Van Aanholt, as they sought cover for Kieran Tierney.

But Palace moved to fend off interest from the Gunners by handing him a four-year extension.

Mitchell was part of Brentford’s academy but left when the club closed it in 2016, opening the door for the Eagles to swoop in and take him.

He made his Premier League debut for the club as a substitute, replacing Van Aanholt late on in a 3-0 defeat by Leicester, last July.

And he has gone from strength to strength this season under Hodgson.

His rise has generated comparisons with two other homegrown fullbacks who ultimately left south London in big-money moves to join English football's elite: Nathaniel Clyne and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
