Crystal Palace 1-1 Brighton: Wilfried Zaha strike shares the spoils in M23 derby

Wilfried Zaha's late stunning strike salvaged a point for injury-hit Crystal Palace as they drew 1-1 with rivals Brighton at Selhurst Park.

In his pre-match interview, Palace boss Roy Hodgson revealed the extent of their injury crisis, describing it as "the worst he had experienced at the club" with six senior members out - five of whom were defenders.

That meant a first start in 659 days for Dutchman Jairo Riedewald, who was forced to deputise at left-back following injuries to Jeffrey Schlupp and Patrick van Aanholt.

From the off, it was Brighton who were positive on the ball and looking dangerous, with Aaron Mooy firing into the side-netting from 20 yards out.

The away side began to dominate possession too with Palace struggling to get out of their half and tested Vicente Guaita through Martin Montoya. VAR checked for a potential penalty after an apparent trip from Riedewald but VAR decided not to overturn the decision from referee Craig Pawson.

Long-range efforts from Pascal Gross and Yves Bissouma followed but Guaita showed a safe pair of hands as the pressure began to mount on the hosts.

By the time they reached the interval, the shot count read: Palace zero, Brighton six - only the fourth time the Eagles have failed to register a shot in the first half at Selhurst Park since being promoted six years ago.

The second half appeared to be heading in the same direction until Christian Benteke's cross almost put Palace in front, crashing off the post and Zaha failing to put home the rebound.

Just four minutes later, Brighton found the opener. The impressive Leandro Trossard volleyed in a bouncing cross which evaded everyone but not Neal Maupay, who took time to bring the ball under control and fire emphatically into the top corner.

Maupay almost doubled his and Brighton's tally just minutes later when Guaita spilled a cross but the French striker couldn't capitalise on the error.

Palace made some changes and suddenly looked a threat as Benteke went close before Wilfried Zaha, with a fine piece of play, hammered home into the top corner with quarter of an hour left.

The hosts were looking dangerous on the break and nearly made it count only for Jordan Ayew to blaze over the bar late on as both sides shared the spoils, although the spirited comeback from the hosts will mean it feels like a victory
