Crying, hungry baby found crawling near bodies of five family members on cliff

A crying baby girl has been found crawling near the bodies of five family members on a cliff.

The one-year-old youngster, who was wearing just a nappy, was cold and hungry when a young mother stumbled across her at the roadside.

She alerted police, who then recovered the bodies of two adults and two children nearby. They went on to find the body of third adult a few metres away.

The grim discovery was made at the Nausori Highlands in Fiji on Monday and police have confirmed they are questioning a man from New Zealand, who is known to the family.

A woman - believed to be his wife - was also being interviewed. It has been claimed the man is a witch doctor, but this has not been confirmed.

Kelera Toloi, the 25-year-old who found the baby, told the Fiji Sun she changed the girl's soggy nappy and fed her two bottles.

"Fortunately she couldn't walk yet or she would've fallen off the cliff," she told the publication.

"As a mother, it's a really sad scenario."

The baby girl was taken to hospital as crime scene investigators descended on the area looking for clues behind the shocking deaths.

All of the family members' phones were left at home. While one of their cars was found parked in a supermarket car park.

The deaths are thought to be as a result of ingesting toxic substance, post-mortem examination results showed, but police have yet to reveal what the substance is.

None of the family members, who lived in nearby Legalega, in the city of Nadi, had visible injuries, reports Stuff.co.nz.

The victims have been named as 63-year-old carpenter Nirmal Kumar, his wife Usha Devi, 54, their 34-year-old daughter Nileshni Kajal and her two daughters aged 11 and eight.

The baby girl - Samaira Kumar - is believed to be Nileshni Kajal's niece.

Fiji Police tweeted: "More tests will be conducted by the Fiji Police Chemistry Lab in Nasova following the post mortem examination conducted on the five victims of the Nausori Highlands tragedy as it showed all victims had ingested an alleged harmful substance which resulted in their deaths.

"Investigators are interviewing a person of interest in relation to the Nausori Highlands case. The man is known to the family. Investigations continue."
