Crushed Chelsea star Ethan Ampadu consoled by Gareth Bale after shock red card in Wales match

Wales were left stunned at Euro 2020 as Ethan Ampadu was sent off against Italy in a tense match.

Ampadu looked devastated as he was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Federico Bernardeschi in the 55th minute.

Captain Gareth Bale consoled the young Chelsea defender or midfielder as he left the pitch with his shirt over his face to leave Wales up against it.

Rob Page's side were trailing 1-0 at the time as they looked to hold on to second place in Group A.

The decision seemed harsh to a lot of Welsh fans, with co-commentator John Hartson insisting Ampadu should only have been shown a yellow for stamping on Bernardeschi's foot with a late tackle.

But ITV refereeing expert Peter Walton said: "You can clearly see Ampadu was late with his challenge there, he comes down forcibly on the Italian defender’s ankle there. VAR will check this but I’m afraid it’s going to be a red card because in the pre-match instructions from Uefa this type of foul would be sanctioned with a red card.”

BBC pundit Nathan Blake added: "It's a nasty one I have to say, it's the sort of challenge that could leave Federico Bernardeschi with a broken ankle. Goes with a stretched right foot and just catches him in the ankle. He's obviously not meant it. He'll be devastated."

Ampadu became the youngest player in European Championships history to be shown a straight red card, aged 20 years and 279 days.
