Crusaders pair on Glenavon radar as Gary Hamilton looks to strengthen

Glenavon are hoping to sign Crusaders captain Colin Coates this transfer window.

It is understood the Lurgan Blues are closing in on a deal for the 34-year-old defender before Friday's deadline.

Coates - who comes out of contract this summer at Crusaders - has spent his entire career with the Shore Road club.

This season he has made 14 league appearances for Stephen Baxter's side, and only recently returned from a back injury.

Meanwhile, it is also believed Coates' teammate Sean Ward is on Glenavon's radar.

Ward - who joined the Crues in the summer of 2017 - is currently recovering from an injury sustained last October in a game against Coleraine.

The 36-year-old former Linfield defender also comes out of contract this summer, but isn't expected to leave Seaview this transfer window.

Speaking after Tuesday's 4-0 defeat to Glentoran, Glenavon manager Gary Hamilton said he was close to signing a player that will hopefully tighten up the Lurgan Bues’ defence.

He said: “I am hoping to bring in a player that will help me do that before the end of the window, with a view for the next couple of years.

"That’s what I am trying to do and hopefully we can get it over the line. But we need winners, we need boys who don’t want to concede goals.”
