Crunch time for Irish League season as UEFA outlines Euro format

UEFA has confirmed plans for next season's Champions League and Europa League qualifying rounds.

It has been confirmed that the first, second and third qualifying rounds will be played over one leg instead of home and away.

A draw will be used to determined who has home advantage for the tie.

The final play-off round will feature home and away legs.

Key dates

  • Preliminary round: 8 and 11 August
  • First qualifying round: 18/19 August
  • Second qualifying round: 25/26 August
  • Third qualifying round: 15/16 September
  • Play-offs: 22/23 and 29/30 September

Meanwhile, the qualifying rounds of the Europa League will all be played over one leg, with qualifying starting on August 20.

Key dates

  • Preliminary round: 20 August
  • First qualifying round: 27 August
  • Second qualifying round: 17 September
  • Third qualifying round: 24 September
  • Play-offs: 1 October

Wednesday's news looks likely to impact on any plans on how to conclude the current Danske Bank Premiership season.

Northern Ireland's European teams have yet to be decided with this season's Irish League currently in limbo.

No decision on how to finish the 2019/20 campaign has been made, but it is hoped there will be more clarity when clubs meet with NIFL chiefs on Thursday.

The Irish FA must nominate three clubs to play in UEFA's club competitions by August 3.

Seven games remain in this season's Danske Bank Premiership, with clubs having voiced their determination to complete the campaign later in the year.

That option looks increasingly unlikely after UEFA's announcement on Wednesday, while it has been reported that the Irish FA has no plans to extend the current league campaign into the autumn.

A majority of clubs have already rejected the two official proposals on how to end the season - playing two more rounds of fixtures or allowing a mathematical model to decide the final league positions.

Glentoran tabled another proposal last week, to rewind the league table to when each club had played each other home and away and nominating European clubs based on those standings.

That would see Cliftonville enter the Champions League but not declared champions, with Linfield and Glentoran filling the Europa League spots.

There would also be a weighted allocation of the European prize money.

Meanwhile, the Irish FA remains intent on playing the Irish Cup semi-finals and final before August 3.
