All is not well in Eden. Eden Enterprises that is, where Adam and Eve are engaged in naming fruit and God has CCTV cameras everywhere. So when the duo are tempted to take a bite out of the oldest apple in the world He soon knows about it and has them flung out of Eden. Part quest story, part physics GCSE, part fairy story, Tangram's show succeeds in incorporating Isaac Newton, Johnny Appleseed and William Tell into its core as Adam and Eve set off through the world in search of another apple.
It's quite jolly stuff, but the storytelling lacks Tell's straight-as-an-arrow aim, and the performances are sometimes too over-emphatic for comfort and the small space. There is one actor in particular who treats the audience as if we are all slightly backward five-year-olds.
That is part of a wider problem of pitch affecting the entire show, which wants to be all things to all people and all ages and cover every aspect of the apple (we even get the branding of New York thrown in). As a result the storyline never gets a chance to breathe and develop. One minute Adam and Eve are apparently jealous colleagues; the next we're supposed to believe that they are in love.
Without doubt this show has got potential and Tangram have the talent to see it through. But currently it is just one flavour - oversweet - and needs to develop more bite.
