Crumlin security alert investigation leads to three arrests

Police investigating a security alert sparked by a device being found wedged in a car’s front grill have arrested three men.

Detectives probing the incident, in Crumlin in January, detained the men “following a number of searches on Friday 28th February”.

Detective Inspector Rea said: “The security alert was sparked after a device was discovered wedged into the front grill of a vehicle parked in the Lurgan Road area, close to the junction of Maple Park in Crumlin, on Thursday 16th January.

“This morning detectives from Criminal Investigation Branch based in Musgrave, supported by colleagues from the Terrorism Investigation Unit and Operational Support Department conducted four searches in the Newry, Belfast and Dunmurry areas and arrested two men aged 55 and a third aged 58. The men were arrested under the Terrorism Act and have been taken to the Serious Crime Suite at Musgrave for questioning.

“Our investigation into this incident is ongoing and anyone with any information is asked to contact detectives at Musgrave on 101 quoting reference number 1665 16/01/20.”

The PSNI added that “information can also be given anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111”.
